Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda – A Visiting Guide

Located in the stunning region of Cao Bang, just 500 meters from the renowned Ban Gioc Waterfall and near the Chinese border, Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda offers not only a spiritual retreat but also breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The pagoda, perched on Phia Nham Mountain, provides a vantage point to admire the cascading waters of Ban Gioc and the lush paddy fields and towering mountains that frame the area.

Inaugurated on December 15th, 2014, Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda is relatively new but steeped in traditional Vietnamese architectural style. The pagoda was constructed using ironwood, terracotta tiles, and old-fashioned gables, embodying a classic aesthetic that pays homage to Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage.

Set on a 3-hectare site, the pagoda features a three-door gate, a statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, a three-realms hall, and temples dedicated to significant historical and spiritual figures, including Lady Trieu, the Hung Kings, and Saint Tran Hung Dao. The complex also includes a Holy Mother temple, an Eden garden, and an Alahat Statue Garden, creating a serene atmosphere for contemplation and worship. One of the highlights of the pagoda is the Thien Bao bell tower, which houses a 1.5-ton bronze bell, adding a touch of grandeur to this tranquil site.

The View from the Ban Gioc Pagoda

While the pagoda itself is a peaceful cultural site, many visitors are drawn to Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda for its panoramic views. From the higher levels of the pagoda, you can catch glimpses of the Ban Gioc Waterfall, though the entire cascade is not fully visible. The best views of the waterfall are from the waterfall itself, but the pagoda offers a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape.

The view extends beyond the waterfall, showcasing the Quay Son River as it winds through the valley, with the majestic mountains on both sides. Interestingly, the mountains across the river mark the border with China, adding an international element to the breathtaking scenery.

Is it worth visiting the temple?

If your primary goal is to capture the perfect photo of Ban Gioc Waterfall, you’ll get the best shots at the waterfall itself. The pagoda’s views, while scenic, don’t offer a complete picture of the falls. Additionally, as a relatively new construction, the pagoda lacks the historical depth of some other temples in Vietnam.

However, the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape are still impressive, and the pagoda provides a peaceful atmosphere for reflection and contemplation. If you have time to spare and the weather is clear, a visit to Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda can be a rewarding addition to your Cao Bang itinerary, especially if you’re seeking a moment of tranquility, while taking in the beauty of Cao Bang’s landscape

How to get there?

The first step to visiting Phat Tich Truc Lam Ban Gioc Pagoda is getting to Cao Bang, which lacks both a train station and an airport. Therefore, traveling by road is your only option. You can choose a sleeper bus if you prefer to save daylight hours for exploring, or opt for comfortable and affordable shared limousine vans. For those seeking more privacy and convenience, a private car is also an option.

From Cao Bang City, you will need private transportation to reach Ban Gioc Waterfall and the nearby pagoda. Although a public bus is available, it is not recommended due to its limited schedules and less flexibility for exploring the area. Here are your options:

Driving a Motorbike:

Renting a motorbike in Cao Bang is relatively easy, with prices ranging from 100k to 150k VND per day. Riding a motorbike offers a sense of adventure and flexibility, allowing you to stop and explore along the way. However, it’s important to have a valid license and some experience with motorbikes, especially since the roads can be winding and challenging in parts.

Motorbike Tour:

If you want to experience the thrill of riding a motorbike but prefer not to drive yourself, a motorbike tour is an excellent alternative. You’ll ride on the back of a motorbike driven by an experienced local guide who knows all the best spots. This option allows you to fully enjoy the scenery without the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads.

Private Car:

For those who prioritize comfort and convenience, renting a private car with a driver is the best choice. This option provides protection from the weather and is ideal for those traveling in groups or with family. Although less adventurous than a motorbike, a private car allows you to explore the area at your own pace.

Tips for visiting the Ban Gioc Pagoda

Dress Appropriately

As with any religious site in Vietnam, it is important to dress modestly. Ensure your shoulders and knees are covered to show respect when visiting the pagoda.

Combine Your Visit

While Ban Gioc Waterfall is undoubtedly the highlight of the area, there are other nearby attractions worth exploring:

  • Nguom Ngao Cave: A fascinating cave located just a few kilometers from the waterfall.
  • Phong Nam Valley: A hidden gem with stunning landscapes of rice fields and mountains.
  • Angel Eye Mountain: Although not directly nearby, this site is on the way from Cao Bang City and offers a unique stop.

Best Time to Visit

The pagoda offers the best views during the early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and the landscape is at its most beautiful. If possible, time your visit accordingly to capture the best photos and enjoy a more serene experience.

Prepare for the Weather

Even on sunny days, the area around the waterfall can be misty, so it’s a good idea to bring a light jacket or rain poncho. If you’re visiting during the rainy season, be sure to wear appropriate footwear, as paths can become slippery.
