From Phong Nha to Hanoi – Flight, train & bus options explained

Traveling from Phong Nha to Hanoi is a long trip north of around 500 kilometers, back to the capital in the north of Vietnam. There is no direct or quick route, so most travelers make the journey overnight to save time, either by train, sleeper bus, or a short flight. This guide covers all three, and explains how leaving Phong Nha works, since the town has no station or airport of its own.

About the route from Phong Nha to Hanoi

Phong Nha and Hanoi sit around 500 kilometers apart, which makes this a long journey however you travel. The starting point shapes your options. Phong Nha is not a city or a large town but a national park area, with the small town of Son Trach at its base, and it has no train station or airport. The train and the flight therefore both begin in Dong Hoi, the nearest city, which you reach first, while the sleeper bus runs all the way from Phong Nha without a change. A private car is not worth considering over this distance, since the drive alone takes around 8 hours.

Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital and the main transport hub of the north. It rewards time in its own right, with its Old Quarter, lakes, history, and street food, and it is also the launching point for onward travel to Sapa, Halong Bay, and Ninh Binh. Most travelers pass through it to continue their trip.

Plan your time there with our Hanoi travel guide.

Tip: travel this route as a guided journey with Local Vietnam

Rather have the whole trip arranged? Our Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, Hue, and Hoi An tour links these places over six days by train and private car, taking in the DMZ, the Phong Nha jungle and caves, and Hue’s imperial sights. It runs in either direction, so it works whether you are heading north to Hanoi or south toward Hue and Hoi An.

Option 1: By train from Phong Nha to Hanoi

Why choose the train

The train is the most comfortable way to travel from Phong Nha to Hanoi, and a good choice for the long overnight journey. It gives you room to move and a proper bed in the sleeper cabins, and it runs reliably, unlike the flight, which has only a limited schedule. The one thing to know is that it does not leave from Phong Nha itself, so you first travel to Dong Hoi and pick up the train there.

How it works

From Dong Hoi railway station, trains run north to Hanoi in around 8.5 to 10 hours, on top of the roughly 1-hour transfer from Phong Nha to Dong Hoi, which you can read about in our guide on how to get from Phong Nha to Dong Hoi. Because of the length, an overnight train makes the most sense, letting you sleep through the ride and save a night’s accommodation. A soft sleeper in a 4-berth cabin is the most comfortable choice, with fares from around 500,000 VND (roughly $20). A few tourist trains with smarter cabins also run this route at a higher price.

Who it is for

The train suits travelers who want a comfortable overnight journey and would rather arrive rested than spend the same hours on a bus. It is the better pick if you value sleep and reliability, as long as you do not mind the transfer to Dong Hoi first.

Option 2: By bus from Phong Nha to Hanoi

Why choose the bus

The bus is the cheapest way to travel from Phong Nha to Hanoi, and the most popular. Unlike the train and flight, it runs direct from Phong Nha, so there is no separate transfer through Dong Hoi. Most are sleeper buses with flat berths, which suits the long overnight ride, and it is the simplest option if you would rather not change transport along the way.

How it works

The journey takes around 9 to 12 hours depending on the operator and traffic, usually overnight, with pickup in Phong Nha and drop-off in Hanoi. Several companies run the route, including HK Buslines, Queen Cafe Bus, and Grouptour, with fares from around 350,000 VND (roughly $14). Most are night buses that arrive in Hanoi early in the morning, so let your accommodation know your timing so you can check in or wait comfortably on arrival.

Who it is for

The bus suits budget travelers who want the cheapest option and a direct trip without arranging a transfer in Dong Hoi. It is the most common choice on this route, as long as you are comfortable with a long ride and an early arrival.

Option 3: By plane from Phong Nha to Hanoi

Why choose to fly

Flying is the fastest way to cover the distance, with the flight itself taking only around an hour, but it comes with two drawbacks. It does not leave from Phong Nha, so you first travel to Dong Hoi airport, and the schedule is limited, so it does not suit every plan. It makes the most sense if the timing happens to fit and you would rather not travel overnight.

How it works

The trip has three parts. First you travel from Phong Nha to Dong Hoi airport, around 45 minutes to an hour by road. Then you fly from Dong Hoi to Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, a flight of about 1 hour 5 minutes. Vietnam Airlines runs the route, usually with one or two flights a day, though the schedule is limited and changes with the season, so check current times and book ahead rather than assuming a convenient departure. Counting the transfer and airport time, the door-to-door total comes to roughly 4 to 5 hours, the quickest of the three, though also the most expensive.

Who it is for

Flying suits travelers who are short on time and whose plans fit the limited schedule, and who are happy to pay more for speed. For most people, though, the overnight train or bus is more reliable and doubles as a night’s accommodation, which is why the flight is the least used of the three.

Conclusion: what is the best option for Phong Nha to Hanoi

The best way from Phong Nha to Hanoi comes down to your budget, your comfort, and how much time you have. A quick way to choose:

Train – the most comfortable and reliable, best taken overnight from Dong Hoi in around 8.5 to 10 hours, after the transfer from Phong Nha. Best for a good night’s sleep on the way.

Bus – the cheapest and most popular, running direct from Phong Nha in around 9 to 12 hours, from about 350,000 VND. Best for budget travelers, though it arrives very early.

Plane – the fastest in the air but with a limited schedule and a transfer to Dong Hoi first. Best only if the timing fits and you would rather not travel overnight.

For most travelers it comes down to this: take the overnight train for the most comfort, or the direct bus for the cheapest and simplest trip. Fly only if speed matters most and the limited schedule happens to line up with your plans.
