The journey takes around 9 to 12 hours depending on the operator and traffic, usually overnight, with pickup in Phong Nha and drop-off in Hanoi. It does not leave from Phong Nha, so you first travel to Dong Hoi airport, and the schedule is limited, so it does not suit every plan. The trip has three parts. First you travel from Phong Nha to Dong Hoi airport, around 45 minutes to an hour by road. Then you fly from Dong Hoi to Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, a flight of about 1 hour 5 minutes. Vietnam Airlines runs the route, usually with one or two flights a day, though the schedule is limited and changes with the season, so check current times and book ahead rather than assuming a convenient departure. Counting the transfer and airport time, the door-to-door total comes to roughly 4 to 5 hours, the quickest of the three, though also the most expensive.
