Dong Hoi Railway Station – the gateway to Phong Nha

Dong Hoi Railway Station is located in Nam Ly Ward, a few kilometers west of the city center, on Thuan Ly Street. Built in 1967, it is a straightforward, functional station — nothing fancy, but well-maintained and clean for its size. It sits on Vietnam’s North-South Reunification Express line, one of the country’s busiest rail corridors, with daily trains running in both directions toward Hanoi in the north and Hue, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City in the south.

For most foreign travelers, Dong Hoi is not the final destination — it is the jumping-off point for Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, about 45 km away. Phong Nha has no train station of its own, which makes Dong Hoi the default arrival point for anyone coming by rail. From the station, onward transport to Phong Nha is straightforward, with several options available at most hours of the day.

Train routes and connections

Dong Hoi Railway Station is a stop on the Reunification Express, Vietnam’s main North-South rail line. Multiple SE trains pass through daily in both directions, making it one of the better-connected mid-sized stations in central Vietnam. Whether you are heading north to Hanoi or south toward Hue, Da Nang, or Ho Chi Minh City, there is usually a train that fits your schedule without much planning around it.

Main routes and approximate travel times:

  • Hanoi: 10–12 hours
  • Ninh Binh: 8–9 hours
  • Hue: 3 hours
  • Da Nang: 5–6 hours
  • Nha Trang: 15–17 hours
  • Ho Chi Minh City: 24–27 hours

Roughly nine trains per day run in each direction, a mix of daytime services and overnight sleepers. The SE1 through SE8 and SE20 all stop here, giving you a reasonable spread of departure times throughout the day and evening. For those wanting more comfort on the Hanoi or Ninh Binh route, the Laman Express and Lotus Express are tourist-oriented sleeper trains worth considering — more on that in the tickets section below.

Getting to and from the station

Where is Dong Hoi Railway Station?

Dong Hoi Railway Station sits in Nam Ly Ward, about 2–3 km west of the city center and the Nhat Le beach area. It is not within walking distance of most hotels, so plan on using Grab or a taxi to get there. The station is easy to find and well-signed.

Grab and taxis

Grab is the most straightforward option for getting to or from the station. It works reliably in Dong Hoi, removes any need for negotiation, and is usually available throughout the day. A ride between the station and the city center costs roughly 40,000–60,000 VND.

Metered taxis are also available, but be selective. Drivers outside the station can be pushy, and some will approach you claiming to offer Grab rides while expecting cash payment outside the app. If someone asks you to cancel your Grab booking and pay them directly, walk away.

From Dong Hoi station to Phong Nha

Most travelers passing through Dong Hoi are on their way to Phong Nha, 45 km away. There are a few realistic ways to make that journey.

Public bus (B4) The cheapest option at around 40,000–60,000 VND. The B4 is a green and yellow bus running roughly every hour from 05:30 to 17:00. It does not stop inside Nam Ly bus station — the stop is outside, across from it, marked with a blue B4 sign. Nam Ly is about 1.5 km from the train station, a 15-minute walk or a short Grab ride. The journey takes around 75–90 minutes and drops passengers at multiple points in Phong Nha village center.

Grab or taxi The most practical option for most travelers. A direct ride to Phong Nha takes about 45 minutes and costs around 400,000–500,000 VND for a 4-seat car. If other travelers at the station are heading the same way, splitting the fare makes it even more economical.

Private transfer The best option for groups, families, or anyone with a lot of luggage. A 7-seat car runs around 600,000–650,000 VND and can be pre-booked through your accommodation or a local agency. This also gives you the option to make a stop along the way, such as at Nhat Le Beach.

Arriving at night Trains arriving late will find the station quiet, but taxis are usually waiting outside even at odd hours. Use Grab where possible, and if you are arriving on a late train, consider pre-booking a transfer in advance to avoid waiting around.

Facilities at Dong Hoi Railway Station

Dong Hoi Railway Station is basic but functional, and cleaner than many Vietnamese stations of a similar size. Do not expect anything modern or polished, but everything you need for a comfortable departure or arrival is there.

Tickets and waiting area

Ticket counters are open approximately 06:00 to 22:00. It is possible to buy a ticket up to an hour before departure, but for sleeper berths on popular routes this is rarely a realistic option — availability goes fast. The waiting area is adequate, and there is a separate VIP lounge if you want a quieter spot to sit. Passengers are only allowed through to the platform once the train is approaching, so expect to wait in the main hall until boarding is announced.

Luggage storage

Luggage storage is available at the station for around 40,000 VND per item per day. This is useful if you are arriving by train and heading straight to the caves without checking into a hotel first.

Food and drinks

There is a small cafeteria inside the station, and a good selection of local restaurants and food stalls directly outside. It is worth grabbing something before you board — the trolley service on trains is hit and miss. The station also has a small koi pond inside, which is a pleasant surprise for such an otherwise no-frills place.

Toilets and WiFi

Toilets are available but not always well-maintained. Use them before boarding if needed, as the facilities on the train are worse. WiFi is available inside the station.

ATM and parking

There is an ATM nearby the station. Parking is available for taxis and private vehicles, which makes drop-offs and pick-ups straightforward.

Buying train tickets

Book in advance for popular routes and busy travel periods — sleeper berths on trains to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City fill up fast, especially during Tet, public holidays, and the peak summer months of June through August.

At the station

Buying at the counter is fine for same-day or next-day travel on less busy trains, but do not count on finding a sleeper berth this way during busy periods. Staff speak limited English, so it helps to have your travel details written down — date, destination, and preferred class — to avoid confusion at the counter.

Online

The official Vietnam Railways website, dsvn.vn, is the most reliable place to book. It accepts international cards and issues e-tickets that can be shown directly on your phone — no need to print anything. Third-party platforms like 12Go Asia and Baolau.com are a practical alternative if you find the official site difficult to navigate, and both send e-tickets by email.

For sleeper berths on popular routes, booking one to two weeks ahead is a safe approach.

Through your hotel or a travel agent

Hotels in both Dong Hoi and Phong Nha can often book tickets on your behalf for a small service fee. It is a convenient option if you prefer not to deal with the booking platforms yourself.

If you are traveling with Local Vietnam, train tickets and transfers are arranged as part of your trip — nothing to sort out separately. Read more about organizing your Quang Binh trip with Local Vietnam.

Practical tips

A few things worth knowing before you arrive or depart from Dong Hoi Railway Station.

Tips for Dong Hoi Railway Station

  • Your ticket shows your carriage and seat or berth number. Check it before you reach the platform so you know exactly where to position yourself. Station staff can help if you are unsure.
  • If you are traveling on the Laman Express, do not queue at the main counter to collect your tickets. There is a separate orange kiosk to the right of the main desk.
  • Taxi drivers outside the station will approach you, sometimes insisting they can take you to the bus station or to Phong Nha. You are not obligated to go with them. If you are taking the B4 bus, it is an easy walk or a short Grab ride to the stop.
  • If you are storing luggage for the day, the ticket staff can hold bags for around 40,000 VND per item — useful if you are heading straight to the caves before checking in anywhere.

General train travel tips

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. Trains in Vietnam generally leave on time.
  • Use the toilet at the station before boarding. Station facilities are basic but better than what you will find on the train.
  • Bring your own snacks and water. The trolley service on board is unreliable.
  • For overnight trains, pack a light layer — the air conditioning in sleeper carriages can get cold — along with earbuds and a small travel pillow.
  • An e-ticket on your phone is accepted on most trains. Keep a screenshot saved in case signal drops in tunnels.
  • Keep valuables in your bag and within reach. Do not leave anything unattended in the carriage.

Things to do in Dong Hoi

If you have time to kill before your train or are genuinely curious about the city, Dong Hoi has a few things worth seeing. Tam Toa Church is a striking ruined Catholic church left partially destroyed from the war — one of the more quietly powerful war relics in central Vietnam. Nhat Le Beach is a clean, uncrowded stretch of sand about 6 km from the station, good for a few hours if you arrive early. The Dong Hoi Citadel, though largely in ruins, gives a sense of the city’s older history and is an easy stop by taxi.

Dong Hoi is not a destination in itself, but it is more than just a transit point. For a full overview, read more about things to do in Dong Hoi.
