About the route from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Hanoi and Ninh Binh are around 95 to 100 kilometers apart, and the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours via the Cau Gie–Ninh Binh expressway. It is one of the simplest routes in the north, with frequent transport throughout the day and a fast, easy road, which is why so many travelers visit Ninh Binh as a day trip from Hanoi. That said, it rewards more than a day, so plenty of people stay a night or two, or use it as their first stop heading south.

There is one practical point worth knowing before you choose how to travel. Ninh Binh city is the main arrival point, but most of the sights are not in the city itself. Tam Coc, Trang An, Hang Mua, and Bai Dinh sit 5 to 15 kilometers out, and most travelers base themselves in the Tam Coc or Trang An area rather than the city. This makes your drop-off point matter: some options take you straight to your hotel near the sights, while others leave you in the city or at the station needing a short onward taxi. It is the single biggest difference between the choices below.

Ninh Binh is one of the most scenic places in the north, often called the inland version of Halong Bay. It is a landscape of limestone karst, rivers, and rice fields, with highlights like the Trang An boat trips, Tam Coc, and the climb up Hang Mua for its valley views. It easily fills a day or two and is one of the most rewarding short trips from Hanoi.

Option 1: By limousine van from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Why choose a limousine van

The limousine van is the best option for most travelers going from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, and the most popular choice with foreign visitors. These are comfortable air-conditioned minivans, usually 9 to 16 seats, that run frequently throughout the day via the expressway, taking around 2 hours. They are cheap, quick, and comfortable, with the big advantage that they pick you up in the Hanoi Old Quarter and can drop you right at your hotel in the Tam Coc or Trang An area, exactly where you want to be. That door-to-door convenience is what sets them apart from the train and standard buses.

Cost and booking

Limousine van tickets start from around 150,000 VND, with the larger VIP seats in the middle row costing a little more and worth requesting if you are prone to car sickness. Drop-off is usually around Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc, Trang An, or Mua Cave, sometimes with a small surcharge for the more distant sites like Bai Dinh. Departures run regularly through the day, so you do not need to plan far ahead, though booking a day or two early is wise in peak season. You can book through operators directly or platforms like 12Go.

Who it is for

The limousine van suits almost everyone on this route: day trippers, those staying a few nights, and anyone who wants a simple, comfortable trip straight to their accommodation. It is the easiest way to reach Ninh Binh if you are staying in the Hanoi Old Quarter, and the most practical for getting close to the sights without arranging extra transport on arrival. Unless you specifically want the train experience or the flexibility of a private car, this is the one to pick.

Option 2: By tour from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Why choose a tour

If you are visiting Ninh Binh in a single day from Hanoi, a tour is often the easiest way to do it. Ninh Binh’s sights are spread out, and seeing the main ones in a day means combining transport, a boat trip, entrance fees, and getting between places, which is a lot to arrange yourself in the time. A tour handles all of it: you are picked up in Hanoi, driven to the sights, and taken through a planned route, usually including a boat trip, a viewpoint like Hang Mua, and lunch, before returning to the capital the same day.

Who it is for

A tour suits travelers who are short on time and want a hassle-free day without planning the logistics. It is the best fit if Ninh Binh is a one-day visit squeezed into a busy itinerary, since everything is organised for you. If you are staying overnight or like to explore at your own pace, the independence of a limousine van plus a rented bicycle or scooter on arrival may suit you better, but for a single packed day, a tour is hard to beat.

Option 3: By private car from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Why choose a private car

A private car is the fastest and most flexible way to travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. The driver picks you up at your hotel in Hanoi and takes you straight to your accommodation in Ninh Binh, Tam Coc, or Trang An, with no shared seats or fixed schedule. Via the expressway it can take as little as 1.5 hours in light traffic. It is the natural choice for families, small groups, anyone with luggage, or travelers who simply want a direct, private trip without the logistics of public transport.

Also good for sightseeing and the return

A private car is not only a transfer. Hired for the day, it is also a flexible way to see Ninh Binh and return to Hanoi, since you can be driven between the sights, wait while you do a boat trip or climb Hang Mua, and head back to the capital when you are ready. One thing to keep clear: the driver is not a guide. They will get you safely between places and can wait for you, but they do not provide commentary or tour the sights with you, so it is a driving service rather than a guided day out.

Cost and booking

Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and usually include fuel, tolls, and the driver. As a rough guide, expect around $25 to $55 one way for a sedan, more for a full day with sightseeing and the return to Hanoi, and more again for larger vehicles. For two or more people the cost becomes reasonable, and for a family it is often the easiest option of all.

Option 4: By train from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

What the train is like

Taking the train in Vietnam is a genuinely nice experience, and the Hanoi to Ninh Binh route runs through pleasant Red River Delta scenery of rice fields and countryside. Trains leave from Hanoi Railway Station, with several departures a day, and the ride itself takes around 2 to 2.5 hours. Fares are cheap, starting from around 100,000 to 150,000 VND for a soft seat, making it one of the most affordable options as well as a relaxed, traffic-free way to travel.

The catch for such a short trip

For a route this short, though, the train is not the most practical choice, and it is worth being honest about why. The ride takes longer than the expressway, and you also have to factor in getting to Hanoi Railway Station, the fixed departure times, and the transfer at the other end, since Ninh Binh station is around 6 kilometers from Tam Coc and needs a taxi or Grab to reach your hotel. Added up, the door-to-door time is noticeably longer than a limousine van that picks you up and drops you off directly. The scenery is nicer from the train, but the convenience is not.

Who it is for

The train suits travelers who enjoy rail travel for its own sake, or who are continuing further south afterwards, where the train comes into its own over longer distances. For a quick Hanoi to Ninh Binh trip, it makes most sense if you value the experience and the scenery over speed and convenience. If you just want to get there easily, the limousine van does it with less hassle.

Option 5: By motorbike from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

Riding a motorbike from Hanoi to Ninh Binh is possible, but it is not the way most travelers should do this route. Motorbikes are banned from the expressway, so you have to take the older national highway, which is slower, busier, and far less pleasant, with a lot of traffic on the way out of Hanoi. For the distance involved, it turns an easy 2-hour trip into a long, tiring ride with little reward.

The better approach, if you want to explore Ninh Binh by scooter, is to take a limousine van there and rent a scooter locally once you arrive. Ninh Binh is wonderful to explore on two wheels, with quiet country lanes between the karst and the rice fields, and renting on the spot means you skip the grind of getting out of Hanoi and keep the fun part. The one exception is if you are riding from Hanoi to Ninh Binh as part of a bigger north to south motorbike trip, where it is simply one leg of a longer journey.

Conclusion: what is the best option for Hanoi to Ninh Binh

The best way to travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh depends on your plans and how you like to travel. Here is a simple way to choose:

  • Limousine van – the best option for most travelers, cheap, comfortable, frequent, and dropping you right at your hotel near Tam Coc or Trang An.
  • Tour – the easiest choice if you are visiting Ninh Binh in a single day, with transport, boat trip, sites, and lunch all arranged for you.
  • Private car – the fastest and most flexible option, ideal for families and groups, and good for sightseeing and the return to Hanoi, though the driver is not a guide.
  • Train – a nice, scenic ride, but slower door to door for such a short trip, and better enjoyed as part of a longer journey further south.
  • Motorbike – not recommended for the route itself, since bikes are banned from the expressway; better to take a van and rent a scooter in Ninh Binh.

For most travelers, it comes down to this: take a limousine van for the easiest door-to-door trip, a tour if you only have one day, or a private car for comfort and flexibility. Choose the train if you love rail travel, and leave the motorbike for exploring Ninh Binh itself rather than getting there.
