Dong Hoi Airport: the closest airport to Phong Nha

Dong Hoi Airport (code VDH) sits about 6 km north of Dong Hoi city, close to the coast and just off National Road 1A. It is the main airport for Quang Binh and, for most visitors, the closest airport to Phong Nha, roughly 45 km away. That is the real reason foreign travelers use it. Phong Nha-Ke Bang is a UNESCO-listed national park holding some of the largest caves on earth, and flying into Dong Hoi is the quickest way to reach its caves and trails from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

It is a small airport, and it feels like one. There is a single runway and one two-story terminal, with no air bridges, so you walk down the steps and cross the tarmac to a shuttle bus. Check-in, security and baggage are all on a small scale, which is mostly good news: you move through quickly and rarely wait long. The flip side is that the facilities are basic and do not always stay open, which is worth planning around. More on that further down.

For now the airport only handles domestic flights, and just a couple of routes at that, so the network is limited. It was built for around 500,000 passengers a year and now handles well more than that, which is why a bigger terminal is under construction. When it opens, Dong Hoi will be able to take more flights, possibly international ones. Until then, treat it as a small regional airport that does one job well: getting you close to Phong Nha.

Direct flights to and from Dong Hoi Airport

Dong Hoi has a small flight network. There are only two direct routes, both domestic, and only two airlines flying them: Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air. That is the whole picture. There are no international flights, and no other Vietnamese cities you can reach without a connection. It sounds limited, but the two routes it does have are the two you are most likely to want, linking Dong Hoi to Vietnam’s biggest hubs in the north and south.

Dong Hoi to Ho Chi Minh City. This is the busier of the two routes, with around three flights a day split between Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air. It is also the longer hop, taking about 1 hour 40 minutes. One-way fares usually sit between $30 and $80, and you can find them cheaper, sometimes under $30, if you book early. Flights run both ways, so this is your direct link to and from the south.

Dong Hoi to Hanoi. The northern route is thinner, usually one or two flights a day, again on Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air. It is a short flight at roughly 1 hour 5 minutes. One-way fares run about $25 to $60. For anyone starting in the north, this is the fastest way to reach Phong Nha, far quicker than the overnight train or bus.

Booking is straightforward. Both airlines sell tickets on their own websites and through the usual booking sites, and prices are lowest a few weeks out, climbing as the date gets closer. VietJet is the budget option and often the cheapest; Vietnam Airlines costs a little more but tends to run on time. Facilities and terminal

Do not expect much from the terminal, and you will not be disappointed. Dong Hoi is a small airport with the basics covered and little more. The good part is that its size makes it fast and easy to use. The catch is that shops and food outlets keep short hours and card payment is unreliable, so it pays to arrive prepared. Here is what you will actually find.

Check-in and security

Check-in and security are quick. The terminal is small, lines are short, and even at busy times you rarely wait long. Arriving 90 minutes before a domestic flight is plenty. There are no air bridges, so when you board you walk down onto the tarmac and take a short shuttle bus, or sometimes just walk, to the plane. On arrival the same applies, and because everything is close together, bags often reach the belt before you do.

Food and drink

There are a few cafes and small food counters selling coffee, pho, banh mi, snacks and drinks. Prices are fair. The problem is the hours. Outlets often do not open until the afternoon and can close well before the last flights, so travelers arriving early or late sometimes find nothing open, not even water. If your flight is outside the middle of the day, buy food and a drink before you reach the airport rather than counting on something being open.

Shops and souvenirs

The terminal has a handful of small shops selling local specialties, handicrafts and a few gifts, mostly in the departure area past security. It is fine for a last-minute souvenir or something to snack on, but do not plan real shopping here. There is no duty-free, since this is a domestic airport.

Money and cash

This is the one to plan for. Card payment is unreliable across the airport, cash machines are limited or missing, and some food and ticket counters take cash only. Do not arrive expecting to pull money from an ATM or pay everything by card. Bring enough Vietnamese dong with you to cover food, a taxi or a bus, and anything else you might need before and just after your flight.

Wifi, charging and seating

The waiting area is simple but comfortable enough, with plenty of seats and spots to charge your phone before boarding. Wifi is available, though it can be slow, so download anything you need in advance. It is a calm, quiet airport, and with security behind you there is little to do but sit and wait for your flight, which usually does not take long.

How to get from Dong Hoi Airport to Phong Nha

Getting from Dong Hoi Airport to Phong Nha is the last step of your journey, and it is a simple one. The two are about 45 km apart, and the drive takes around an hour along the Ho Chi Minh Road, through rice fields and limestone hills. There is no direct public transport straight from the terminal, so you have a few options depending on your budget and how much hassle you want to avoid. For a fuller breakdown of the route in both directions, see our guide on getting from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha.

Private transfer or hotel pickup

This is the easiest option, and for most travelers the one worth paying for. Many Phong Nha hotels and homestays arrange airport pickups, and a car waiting with your name on it after a flight is hard to beat. Prices are usually around 800,000 to 1,200,000 VND for a private car, split between however many of you are travelling. Arrange it with your accommodation when you book, or use a company like Local Vietnam to sort the transfer as part of your trip. It costs more than the bus, but it is direct, door to door, and you skip the airport haggling.

Shared shuttle bus

A middle ground between a private car and the public bus. Several Phong Nha operators run shared shuttles that pick up at the airport, train station and hotels, usually for somewhere between 120,000 and 300,000 VND per person depending on the company. You book in advance, they meet you, and you share the ride with other travelers. It is cheaper than a private transfer and far less effort than the public bus, which makes it a solid choice if you are travelling light and do not mind a fixed departure time.

Taxi

Taxis wait outside arrivals, and the ride to Phong Nha takes about an hour. A fair fare is around 500,000 to 700,000 VND, but airport drivers are known to push for more, sometimes up to 1,000,000 VND, so agree the price before you get in or make sure the meter is running. A better option is Xanh SM, the green electric taxi app, which uses fixed app pricing and takes the haggling out of it. If the airport drivers will not budge on a reasonable rate, order a Xanh SM instead.

Public bus

The B4 bus runs between Dong Hoi and Phong Nha for about 60,000 VND, the cheapest way to make the trip. The catch is that it does not stop at the terminal. The nearest stop is a walk away out on the main road, which is awkward with luggage, and the bus makes many stops along the way, so the journey can stretch past an hour. It is fine if you are on a tight budget and travelling light, but for most people arriving by plane, the extra effort is not worth the few dollars saved.

Motorbike

Riding to Phong Nha yourself is possible, but not really practical straight from the airport, since you would need to rent from a shop in Dong Hoi city first and then carry your luggage on the bike for 45 km. It makes more sense to reach Phong Nha another way and rent a motorbike once you are there, which is the best way to explore the caves and countryside anyway. For that, see our guide to renting and riding a motorbike in Phong Nha.

Getting from Dong Hoi Airport to the city center

Not everyone flying in is heading straight to Phong Nha. If you are staying in Dong Hoi itself, for the beach, the train station, or a night before moving on, the center is only about 6 km south of the airport, a 15 to 20 minute drive. For what is worth your time once you are there, see our guide to things to do in Dong Hoi.

A taxi is the easiest way in. It costs around 120,000 VND and takes about 20 minutes. Xanh SM, the green electric taxi app, is the simplest way to skip the haggling and pay a fair fixed price, and regular taxis wait outside arrivals too. If you are catching an onward train, a taxi will drop you at Dong Hoi railway station in about the same time. Buses B1, B2 and B4 also run into the city for roughly 8,000 to 35,000 VND, but the nearest stop is about 1 km from the terminal and awkward with luggage, so for most arrivals a taxi is worth the small extra cost.
