About the route from Phu Quoc to Hanoi

Phu Quoc sits off the southwest coast in the Gulf of Thailand, while Hanoi lies right up in the north, roughly the full length of the country away. Since Phu Quoc is an island at the opposite end from the capital, flying is the only practical way to travel from Phu Quoc to Hanoi. Going overland would mean a ferry to the mainland and then well over a day of driving north, which no one does when a flight takes a couple of hours. Fortunately the route is well served and often cheap, so the plane is genuinely the only choice worth weighing up. Phu Quoc, where the trip begins, is the country’s largest island and a full beach-resort destination, covered in our Phu Quoc travel guide if you are still enjoying your last days there.

Hanoi is the capital and the cultural heart of the north, a busy, atmospheric city that feels a world apart from the beaches you are leaving. Its centre is the Old Quarter, a tangle of narrow trading streets best explored on foot, dotted with cafes, street-food stalls, and quiet lakes. It is also the launch point for the north’s headline trips, from a Halong Bay cruise to the mountains of Sapa and the loops around Ha Giang. Our Hanoi travel guide covers what is worth your time.

Flying from Phu Quoc to Hanoi

With the length of the country to cover, everyone makes this trip by air, and it is quick and simple. A non-stop flight runs a little over two hours and drops you outside Hanoi. Here is the full picture, from getting to Phu Quoc’s airport to reaching the city at the other end.

How the flight works

The direct flight from Phu Quoc to Hanoi takes around 2 hours 5 minutes, on a busy route with departures spread across the day. Three carriers fly it non-stop: VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines, and Sun PhuQuoc Airways. Departures leave Phu Quoc International Airport in the south of the island and land at Noi Bai Airport, north of Hanoi. Be careful comparing options, as some of the lower fares you will see are self-transfer connections through Ho Chi Minh City that stretch the trip to five or six hours, so filter for a true non-stop.

Prices and booking

Fares swing widely by airline, date, and how early you book. VietJet is usually the cheapest, often from around 900,000 VND (roughly $36) for a basic ticket with hand luggage only. Vietnam Airlines and Sun PhuQuoc Airways run higher, generally from around 1,450,000 to 1,700,000 VND (roughly $58 to $68), with a checked bag included. Prices rise close to departure and through the busy December-to-February season, so reserving a few weeks ahead pays off. Tickets are available straight from the airlines or through sites such as 12Go and Traveloka, and our domestic flights guide runs through the basics of flying within Vietnam.

Getting from your hotel to Phu Quoc airport

Phu Quoc International Airport is in the south of the island, around 10 to 15 kilometres from the main town of Duong Dong and close to the Long Beach resort strip. From Long Beach or Duong Dong it is a 15 to 20-minute drive; from the northern resorts near Ong Lang or Grand World, allow 30 to 45 minutes. A hotel or resort transfer is the easiest option, offered free or for a set price by many places. Otherwise a metered taxi from a trusted firm like Mai Linh runs about 180,000 to 250,000 VND (roughly $7 to $10) from Duong Dong, or you can order a Grab, which works well on the island and quotes the fare upfront. Aim to be at the airport at least 1.5 to 2 hours before a domestic departure.

Getting from Noi Bai airport into Hanoi

At the other end, Noi Bai is Hanoi’s main airport but sits well outside the city, about 30 kilometres and 45 minutes to an hour from the Old Quarter. You can reach the centre by taxi or Grab, by the cheaper airport shuttle buses, or by the express Bus 86, which runs to the Old Quarter and the railway station. Agree a taxi fare or use the meter, and be wary of drivers quoting inflated flat rates at arrivals. Our guide on getting from the airport into the Old Quarter sets out the options and current prices.

Conclusion: what is the best option for Phu Quoc to Hanoi

For anyone traveling from Phu Quoc to Hanoi, the choice is straightforward: fly. A direct flight takes a little over two hours, runs several times a day, and can be cheap booked ahead, with no realistic way to make the trip overland. The only real questions are which airline suits you and how early you book.

Fly direct, booking a few weeks ahead for the best fares and checking you have a non-stop rather than a long connection. Sort your transfer to Phu Quoc airport before you leave the island, and use Grab, a taxi, or the airport bus to get from Noi Bai into Hanoi at the other end.
