From Cat Ba to Hanoi – Direct transfers including ferry

Traveling from Cat Ba to Hanoi means leaving the island first by boat and then continuing overland to the capital, a combined trip of around 170 kilometers. Almost everyone does it on a single bus-and-ferry ticket that handles the whole chain, though a private car and a slower route through Hai Phong are also options. This guide covers each of them and helps you pick the one that fits, with a few practical notes for anyone catching a flight out of Hanoi.

About the route from Cat Ba to Hanoi or the airport

Cat Ba and Hanoi are roughly 170 kilometers apart by the combined route, but the distance is only part of it, since the first leg has to be made by sea. You start with a crossing from the island back to the mainland near Hai Phong, then follow fast expressway northwest to Hanoi, a drive of a little over two hours. The whole trip takes around 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on the crossing and traffic. If you are heading straight to a flight rather than into the city, some services run all the way to Noi Bai Airport, which saves arranging a separate transfer across Hanoi. The main choices are a direct bus, a private car, or the slower do-it-yourself route through Hai Phong.

Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital and the main transport hub of the north. It rewards time in its own right, with its Old Quarter, lakes, history, and street food, and it is also the launching point for onward travel to Sapa, Ha Giang, Halong Bay, and the south. Most travelers pass back through it to carry on, whether that means a flight, a train, or another bus.

Plan your time there with our Hanoi travel guide.

How the ferry crossing works

Because Cat Ba is an island, leaving always starts with a boat, and it is worth knowing how this fits into the trip. You travel from your hotel to a pier on the island, cross to a mainland port on the Hai Phong side, usually Got Pier, and then continue by road from there. There are different piers and boat types, but as with the trip out, you rarely need to arrange this yourself. Most bus tickets to Hanoi are sold as a single combined fare that already includes the crossing, so one ticket covers the whole journey and the connection is handled for you.

For a full breakdown of the piers, boat types, and schedules, see our Cat Ba ferry guide.

Option 1: By direct bus from Cat Ba to Hanoi

Why choose the direct bus

The direct bus is the easiest way to travel from Cat Ba to Hanoi, and what most travelers use. It runs as a single combined ticket covering the whole journey, the crossing off the island, the mainland coach, and the drop in Hanoi, so you book once and everything is handled. Many operators pick up from hotels in Cat Ba Town and drop close to your accommodation in the Hanoi Old Quarter, with the whole trip taking around 3.5 to 4.5 hours.

How the combined ticket works

The trip runs in three linked parts. First a shuttle takes you from your hotel in Cat Ba Town to the island’s ferry terminal, around half an hour. Then you cross to the mainland, usually landing at Got Pier on the Hai Phong side. Finally a coach carries you northwest on the expressway into Hanoi, a little over two hours.

How the crossing works depends on the operator, and it comes in two forms:

  • On the vehicle ferry, the coach can drive onto the boat, so you stay with the same bus across the water.
  • On the speedboat crossings, you cross as a foot passenger and a separate coach meets you on the mainland.

Either way it is one ticket with one operator handling the connections, and the crossing is already covered, so there is nothing extra to buy at the pier.

Cost and booking

Fares start from around 265,000 VND (roughly $10 to $11) and rise for limousine and VIP classes with more comfort and fewer seats. Several operators run the route, including Cat Ba Express, Good Morning Cat Ba, Daiichi Travel, and Grouptour, with departures spread through the day. You can book through platforms like 12Go or Baolau, or ask your hotel to arrange it. Book a day or two ahead in summer and at weekends, when the island empties out and seats fill.

A warning if you have a flight to catch

This is worth taking seriously. Buses on this route are not always on time, and delays of an hour are common, with two hours not unheard of when the ferry timing, weekend traffic, or slow hotel pickups stack up. That is fine if Hanoi is your final stop, but risky if you are connecting to a flight the same day. If you have a plane to catch, give yourself a generous buffer, take an early departure rather than a midday one, and do not book the trip so tight that a two-hour delay would cost you the flight. Better still, travel the day before if the timing is important.

Some operators run services all the way to Noi Bai Airport, which saves arranging a separate transfer across Hanoi at the end. If you are flying out, it is worth looking for one of these direct airport options, though the same advice on timing applies. See our guide to Noi Bai Airport for getting between the airport and the city.

Who it is for

The direct bus suits almost everyone on this route: solo travelers, couples, and families who want a simple, affordable trip without piecing together separate legs. Unless you want the door-to-door comfort of a private car, this is the option to choose.

Option 2: By private car from Cat Ba to Hanoi

Why choose a private car

A private car is the most comfortable and flexible way to travel from Cat Ba to Hanoi. The driver meets you at your hotel on the island and takes you all the way to your address in Hanoi, leaving when you like rather than to a fixed schedule. It suits families, small groups, and anyone with luggage who would rather skip the changes and waiting that come with the bus, and it is the more reliable choice if you are working to a tight deadline like a flight.

The car crosses with you

As on the way out, a proper private transfer puts the car on the vehicle ferry, so you stay with the same car and driver from Cat Ba right through to Hanoi. A regular taxi will not do this: it only takes you to the port, where you cross as a foot passenger and then find new transport on the mainland. If you want a genuine door-to-door trip, and especially if you are heading for the airport, make sure you are booking a private transfer that includes the crossing rather than just a taxi to the pier.

Cost and who it is for

You hire a car with a driver and choose the vehicle size for your group. Prices are per car rather than per person and are much higher than a bus seat, so this makes most sense for families or small groups who can split the cost, or anyone who values comfort, privacy, and reliable timing over saving money. For solo travelers and couples on a budget, the direct bus is far cheaper.

See how it works in our guide to renting a car with a driver in Vietnam.

Option 3: Via Hai Phong

The last way to reach Hanoi is to break the trip in Hai Phong, the port city between the island and the capital. You would cross from Cat Ba to Hai Phong first, then continue to Hanoi by train or bus from the city. It is worth knowing this is possible, but for most travelers it is not the easiest or cheapest way to go.

The catch is that it splits a straightforward trip into several separate legs. You cross to Hai Phong, make your way to the train station or bus stop, buy the onward ticket yourself, and travel on from there. All of that takes more time and effort than a single combined ticket, and it rarely works out meaningfully cheaper. Unless you actually want to stop in Hai Phong, there is little reason to travel this way just to reach Hanoi.

Where it does make sense is if Hai Phong is part of your plan. It is an underrated city with good food and old French-era streets, so breaking the journey there for a night can be worthwhile in its own right. If that appeals, see our Hai Phong travel guide for what the city has to offer.

Conclusion: what is the best option for Cat Ba to Hanoi

The best way to travel from Cat Ba to Hanoi comes down to comfort, budget, and how tight your timing is, since almost everyone ends up on some form of the ferry-and-bus combination. A quick way to choose:

Direct bus – the easiest and most popular choice, a single combined ticket covering the crossing, the coach, and the drop in Hanoi in around 3.5 to 4.5 hours, from about 265,000 VND. Allow plenty of buffer if you have a flight, as delays are common.

Private car – the most comfortable and flexible, taking you door to door with the car crossing on the ferry, and the more reliable choice for tight timing or a trip to the airport.

Via Hai Phong – the least practical way to simply reach Hanoi, and only worth it if you want to stop in the city along the way.

For most travelers it is simple: take the direct bus for an easy, affordable trip, or a private car if you want door-to-door comfort or need dependable timing. Only route through Hai Phong if the city itself is part of your plan. And whichever you choose, if you are catching a flight out of Hanoi, build in extra time rather than cutting it close.
