Hanoi Railway Station – Train Departures & Travel Tips

Hanoi Railway Station, also known as Hanoi Train Station, is the primary train station in Vietnam’s bustling capital city. It serves as a major hub for train travel throughout the country, with departures to various destinations in both the north and south. Whether you’re storing your luggage for a few hours or getting ready to board your train, navigating Hanoi Railway Station can be straightforward with a bit of preparation.

An overview of the Hanoi Train Station

  • Vietnamese: Ga Ha Noi
  • Address: 120 Le Duan Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi.
  • Size: 9 platforms

Hanoi Railway Station is a significant transport hub with two main sections catering to different routes:

Station A is the primary section of Hanoi Railway Station, located on Le Duan Street, just under two kilometers from the center of the Old Quarter. This imposing, grey concrete structure is clearly marked as Ga Ha Noi. Trains departing from Station A head south towards destinations like Hue, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City. Tracks 1 to 6 are reserved for the Vietnamese national railway company’s night trains.

Station B – Going to the North (Sapa)

Station B handles trains heading to northern destinations and has a separate entrance on Tran Quy Cap Street. To reach Station B, cross the level crossing off Le Duan to the north of the station and follow the road to the left. This section serves as the gateway for trains traveling to the northern regions of Vietnam, to Sapa and the Chinese border.

Getting to your train

Tourist Trains

If you’ve purchased a ticket from an agent for one of the tourist trains, you’ll need to exchange it at the relevant desk. This is a straightforward process, with desks typically located just inside the waiting area to the right of the ticket office or in one of the huts at the back.

Waiting Area

If your train isn’t arriving soon, you’ll need to wait in the designated waiting area. Access to the tracks is usually restricted until shortly before the train’s arrival. Screens in the waiting area display train arrival times. When it’s time to board, show your ticket and proceed to your train.

Getting to and from Hanoi Railway Station

Navigating to and from Hanoi Railway Station can be straightforward if you know your options. Here are some suggestions for making your journey smooth.

From the Old Quarter to Hanoi Railway Station

Hanoi Railway Station is conveniently located close to the Old Quarter, making it easily accessible. Although it is close enough to reach on foot, carrying luggage can make this option less feasible. The best way to get there is:

Taxi & Grab

The most convenient way to get to Hanoi Railway Station from anywhere in Hanoi, including the nearby Old Quarter, is by taking a taxi or Grab. It’s very affordable, costing around $2-4 from the Old Quarter. You can hail a taxi on the street, have your hotel call one for you, or book a Grab car through the app. Your hotel can also ensure that you are dropped off at the correct station entrance (A or B).

Other options

  • Motorbike Taxi: If you’re traveling light with just a backpack, a motorbike taxi is a quick option. Booking through Grab is recommended for ease and safety.
  • Bus: Buses are a very cheap option, with fares around VND 5,000 per person. However, due to potential language barriers, this might be challenging for foreign travelers.

From Hanoi Airport to Hanoi Railway Station

If you’re arriving at Hanoi Noi Bai Airport and need to get to Hanoi Railway Station, the best option is to take a taxi. The journey takes around 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, particularly during the evening rush hour. When planning your trip, allow enough time for potential delays, border security checks (if arriving internationally), and baggage collection.

From Hanoi Railway Station to Your Hotel or the Airport

When you arrive at Hanoi Railway Station, be cautious of dodgy taxis, especially if you arrive early in the morning. Always choose a reputable taxi company like Mai Linh and ensure they use the meter.

For a smooth transition from the train station to your hotel or the airport, taxis and Grab cars are the most reliable options. They provide a hassle-free and comfortable way to reach your destination without the worry of navigating public transportation with luggage.

Buying train tickets in Hanoi

Purchasing train tickets in Hanoi can be a straightforward process if you know your options. For information on where you can travel from Hanoi Railway Station, check out the next section in this article: Trains departing from Hanoi.

At the Station

While it is possible to buy train tickets directly at the station, this option is not always recommended, especially if you need tickets for the same day or within a few days. The likelihood of your preferred option being unavailable is higher. However, if you are flexible with your travel plans, you can purchase tickets at the station.

Hanoi Station has an international ticket window (window number 2), which provides ticketing services for foreigners. The staff at this window can speak English, unlike the other ticket windows.

Ticket Hours: 7:30 AM – 12:00 PM; 1:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Online or Through an Agent

A more reliable way to secure your train tickets in advance is to purchase them online or through an agent. Websites like 12go.asia and baolau offer convenient options to book train tickets, ensuring you get a seat in your preferred class. For tourist trains, booking online is the only option as they do not have a ticket counter at the station.

Tips before going on the train

Arrive on time

Ensure you arrive at the station in advance, especially if you still need to exchange your voucher for a ticket. Hanoi’s traffic can be chaotic, particularly during rush hour, so add some extra time to your journey to avoid any last-minute stress.

Bring snacks and drinks

Trains are not fully equipped with restaurants. Sometimes a cart comes by with a few snacks, coffee, and instant noodles, but the options are quite limited. It’s best to bring your own food and drinks, especially for longer journeys.

Comfort Essentials

For longer train journeys, consider bringing a travel pillow, cover, or sleeping mask to make your trip more comfortable. Earplugs or noise-canceling headphones can also help if you’re a light sleeper.

Entertainment

Bring along some entertainment for the journey, such as books, magazines, or downloaded movies and music. While some trains might offer Wi-Fi, it’s best not to rely on it and have offline options available.

Currency and small change

Having small denominations of Vietnamese Dong can be handy for purchasing snacks or drinks on the train or at the station. Most vendors don’t accept credit cards, so it’s good to be prepared.

Health and hygiene

Pack a small toiletry bag with essentials like hand sanitizer, tissues, and wet wipes. This can help you stay fresh and comfortable, especially on longer trips.

Mobile Apps

Download useful apps like Google Translate, maps, and travel guides to help you navigate your journey and communicate more easily.

Hanoi Train Street

If you love seeing trains, keep in mind that the platforms at Hanoi Railway Station are often only accessible to those who have purchased a train ticket. Fortunately, there’s a fantastic alternative for train enthusiasts and curious travelers alike: Hanoi Train Street.

This unique spot is where the train runs right through a very narrow alley, just inches away from residential homes and local businesses. The popularity of this place has led many of the houses to open coffee shops, offering a one-of-a-kind experience where you can enjoy a coffee while the train passes right by you.

Hanoi Train Street is a remarkable sight, blending the daily life of locals with the excitement of the train’s arrival. It’s not just a haven for train spotters but also a fascinating glimpse into the resilience and adaptability of the local community.
