About the route from Hanoi to Bai Tu Long Bay
Bai Tu Long Bay lies northeast of Halong Bay, in Quang Ninh province, and is reached from Hanoi in around two and a half to three hours by road on the expressway. It is the quietest of the three bays in the Halong region, with the same limestone scenery but far fewer boats, so it is visited almost entirely on an overnight or day cruise. That makes the journey from Hanoi a straightforward transfer to whichever port your cruise leaves from. Two things are worth sorting before you travel: which port that is, and whether your cruise includes the transfer, since with Bai Tu Long boats it is not always bundled in. Bai Tu Long Bay itself is covered in our Bai Tu Long Bay guide, and the boats in our Bai Tu Long Bay cruise page, which lists the best options with transfers. Hanoi, where the trip starts, is the capital and the base for northern Vietnam, covered in our Hanoi travel guide.
Which port does your Bai Tu Long Bay cruise leave from?
Unlike Lan Ha Bay cruises, which use ports around Cat Ba, Bai Tu Long boats all leave from the Halong side, so the drive from Hanoi is similar whichever you take. Still, there are two ports, and it is worth knowing which one your cruise uses.
Hon Gai Cruise Port (Halong International Cruise Port)
Most Bai Tu Long cruises leave from Hon Gai Cruise Port, also called the Halong International Cruise Port, near the Sun Wheel in Halong City. It is reached from Hanoi entirely by road, along the Hanoi to Halong expressway, in around two and a half to three hours. The port is modern and well organized, with a short transfer out to the ship at the start.
Tuan Chau Marina
Some Bai Tu Long cruises instead use Tuan Chau Marina, the large cruise harbor on Tuan Chau Island in Halong, a similar distance from Hanoi. If your cruise departs here, the drive is much the same, but the pier is on the other side of the city, so confirm which one your transfer is heading to.
Option 1: The cruise shuttle
Why choose it
If your cruise offers a shuttle, it is the easiest way to reach the boat: they collect you from your Hanoi hotel, drive you to the right port, and time it around your departure. There is nothing to arrange, and everything is coordinated with the cruise.
What to check
With Bai Tu Long Bay, the key thing is whether the transfer is included at all. Many boats bundle a round-trip shuttle into the price, but a good number, especially the smaller boutique operators, offer it only as an optional add-on. Check this carefully before booking, and if it is an add-on, ask the cost, which tends to run 200,000 to 500,000 VND (around $8 to $20) per person each way. If it is expensive, a separate shared van to the same port can be cheaper. The shuttle is shared and picks up around the Old Quarter, so if you are staying elsewhere, you may need to reach the pick-up point yourself.
Option 2: A shared limousine van or bus
Why choose it
When your cruise has no transfer, or the add-on is steep, an independent shared limousine van or bus to the port is a cheap and easy alternative. Plenty run from Hanoi to Halong every day, they are comfortable, and you keep control of your own timing.
How it works
Shared limousine vans and buses run from Hanoi to the Halong cruise ports in around two and a half to three hours. Fares are low, roughly 230,000 to 600,000 VND (about $9 to $24) per person depending on the class, from a basic bus to a plush limousine van. Operators like Cat Ba Express, Ha Lan, and Sao Viet run the route, bookable on 12Go or Vexere. Book to the specific port your cruise uses, and give yourself a comfortable buffer before boarding, since these are shared services making several stops.
Option 3: A private car
Why choose it
A private car is the most comfortable and flexible way to your cruise, running door to door from your Hanoi hotel to the port on your own schedule. It suits families, groups, anyone with luggage, or travelers staying outside the Old Quarter who cannot easily reach a shuttle stop. It costs more, but splits well across a group.
How it works
A private transfer with a driver takes around two and a half to three hours from Hanoi to either port. Prices generally start from around 1,500,000 to 2,500,000 VND (roughly $60 to $100) per car, depending on the vehicle. As it is charged per car, a family or small group can bring the cost per head close to the shuttle fare. Book it to the exact port your cruise leaves from. Our guide to renting a car with a driver in Vietnam explains how it works.
Conclusion: what is the best option for Hanoi to Bai Tu Long Bay
Before booking a transfer, check two things: which port your Bai Tu Long Bay cruise uses, and whether the ride is included.
Take the cruise shuttle if it is included, or a fair add-on, as it is the simplest option and timed to your boat.
Book a shared limousine van if the cruise has no transfer or the add-on is pricey, since it is cheap and runs often to the Halong ports.
Take a private car for comfort and flexibility, especially with a family, luggage, or a hotel outside the Old Quarter, with the cost shared across the group.
For most travelers a shuttle handles it, but with Bai Tu Long cruises more than most, do not assume it is included. Confirm before you book.
