About the route from Ninh Binh to Hue

The direct bus is the cheapest way from Ninh Binh to Hue, running the whole distance without a change. These are sleeper buses with flat berths rather than seats, which makes the long ride more bearable, and they are a reasonable pick for travelers watching their budget.

The trip takes around 10 to 12 hours depending on the operator, almost always overnight, with pickup at the bus company office or in the Tam Coc area. Companies running the route include Queen Cafe Bus, Camel Travel, and HK Buslines, with fares from around 400,000 VND (roughly $16). Buses generally arrive in Hue in the morning and drop in the city center, close to plenty of accommodation. As with any overnight service, an early arrival is worth planning for, so confirm your check-in time with your hotel.

The bus suits budget travelers who want the cheapest through-service and do not mind a berth over the train’s greater comfort. For a modest step up in comfort at a similar overnight cost, though, the train is the better choice.
Option 3: By plane from Ninh Binh to Hue
Why choose to fly
Flying is the quickest way to cover the distance, but it is far from direct and takes several steps. Since Ninh Binh has no airport, you travel to Hanoi first, fly south to Hue, and cover the short transfer at the other end. It makes sense mainly if you would rather arrive during the day than travel overnight, though once the transfers are added, the time saved over the night train is less than it appears.

The trip has three parts. First you travel from Ninh Binh to Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, around 3 hours by road. Then you fly from Hanoi to Phu Bai Airport in Hue, a flight of about 1 hour 15 minutes, with Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and Bamboo Airways all serving the route. Phu Bai sits about 15 kilometers from central Hue, a short taxi ride away. Counting the airport time and both transfers, the door-to-door total is roughly 5 to 7 hours, and it is the priciest way to travel.
Who it is for
Flying suits travelers who are short on time, prefer to travel by day, and are willing to pay more for the several connections. For most people, though, the overnight train covers the same ground more cheaply and lands them right in the center of Hue, which keeps it the better option.

Phong Nha lies directly on the route between Ninh Binh and Hue, which makes it easy to break the journey there instead of passing through.
