Travel Tip: Combine an island with the Mekong Delta with Local Vietnam
Not sure whether to choose Phu Quoc or Con Dao? With Local Vietnam, you can easily combine both islands with the Mekong Delta, including transport from Ho Chi Minh City and a speed ferry to the island. Explore our route via the Mekong Delta to Phu Quoc and Saigon, or choose a route via the Mekong Delta to Con Dao and Saigon.
The dilemma: Phu Quoc or Con Dao
If you want to end your Vietnam trip on an island, you will quickly end up choosing between Phu Quoc or Con Dao. Both are in southern Vietnam and both make sense as a final stop after cities and nature on the mainland. In practice, you will almost always choose one or the other; combining both usually adds unnecessary travel time and offers little extra value. The choice may seem difficult at first, but the differences are clear enough to make it fairly straightforward. Below, we explain them step by step.
- Phu Quoc – A large and developed island with long beaches, many resorts, and a wide range of restaurants and activities; clearly focused on beach tourism.
- Con Dao – A smaller, quieter, and greener island with a heavy historical background, including the Con Dao prison, and nature playing the main role; less touristy, with more focus on peace, diving, and wildlife such as sea turtles.
Best time to visit
Before comparing the islands in detail, it’s worth looking at the best time to visit. For some travelers, this alone can already determine whether Phu Quoc or Con Dao is the better choice.
Best time to visit Phu Quoc
- December – April – This is the dry season on Phu Quoc. During these months, you have the highest chance of stable, sunny weather with little rain and calm seas, making it ideal for beach days and boat trips. November and May are considered transitional months and can also be good, although short बारिश showers are slightly more likely.
Best time to visit Con Dao
- December – April – This is also the dry season on Con Dao. The weather is pleasant and relatively dry, but there is often more wind compared to Phu Quoc. As a result, the sea can be rougher and conditions are less suitable for diving and snorkeling.
- April – August – This is technically the rainy season, but with an important advantage: there is much less wind. Rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts at one point during the day, after which the weather clears up again. This is the best period for diving around Con Dao and also the peak season for spotting sea turtles.
Accessibility
Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc is the easiest island to include in almost any itinerary, simply because there are many connections. You can usually fly there directly from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, and in some periods there are also (limited) domestic routes from cities like Da Nang, Nha Trang, or Can Tho.
Phu Quoc also has international flights (depending on the season and schedule), which can be convenient if Vietnam is part of a larger Southeast Asia trip.
By land and water, the island is also accessible by ferry from the Mekong Delta, mainly via Rach Gia and Ha Tien.
Con Dao
You immediately notice that Con Dao is smaller and less touristy when it comes to accessibility. Most flights are from Ho Chi Minh City, with a more limited number of connections from Hanoi and sometimes Can Tho, depending on the schedule and season.
By sea, you can reach Con Dao by boat from Tran De (near Soc Trang) in the Mekong Delta, which can make sense if you want to combine the Mekong Delta with a visit to the island.
In practice, this doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker. If your route already passes through Ho Chi Minh City or the Mekong Delta, Con Dao is still easy enough to include—you just have a bit less flexibility in terms of flight times and travel days.
Winner for accessibility: Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc clearly wins here, simply because you have more (and often more direct) flight options, as well as the added flexibility of ferry connections from multiple locations in the Mekong Delta.
Beaches & Beach experience
A direct comparison based purely on beaches isn’t entirely fair. The difference is less about the quality of the sand or the sea, and more about how central beaches and beach life are to the overall travel experience. Phu Quoc is clearly set up as a beach destination, while Con Dao combines beaches with tranquility, nature, and a sense of isolation.
Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc simply offers more beaches to choose from, spread across the island. There is a wide range of resorts and hotels located directly on the beach, in different price categories, making beachfront stays relatively accessible for many travelers.

Along the more popular beaches, there is also more activity: beach bars, restaurants, sunbeds, watersports, and other beach activities are easy to find. This makes Phu Quoc a strong choice if you’re looking for a classic beach holiday with comfort and plenty of options.
Con Dao
Con Dao has fewer beaches, and the selection is more limited. There are certainly beautiful beaches, but the number of resorts and hotels directly on the coast is small and often on the more expensive side.

You won’t find rows of beach bars or a lively beach scene here; facilities are intentionally limited. In return, the beaches are quieter, often nearly empty, and feel much more natural. For travelers who value peace and isolation over amenities, this is exactly what makes Con Dao appealing.
Winner for beaches: Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc wins as a beach destination, offering more choice, more facilities, and more beachfront accommodation. That said, Con Dao may be the better option if you prefer quiet, untouched beaches over a lively beach scene.
Landscape and nature
Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is a relatively flat island. A large part of the interior is covered by a national park, but the opportunities to truly explore it are limited. In practice, a visit to Phu Quoc is mainly focused on the coast and the beaches, rather than discovering impressive landscapes or nature in the interior.
Con Dao

Con Dao feels completely different in this regard. The island has a hilly to mountainous landscape, with dense jungle, rugged coastlines, and a noticeably wilder atmosphere. In and around the natural areas, you may encounter monkeys, and in the right season, Con Dao is also known for sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs.
Nature plays a much bigger role here in the overall travel experience.
Winner for landscape and nature: Con Dao
Con Dao clearly stands out, as nature and scenery are a central part of the island experience, whereas Phu Quoc is mainly focused on beaches and resorts.
Accommodation
Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc has by far the largest and most diverse range of accommodation. You’ll find everything from high-end beachfront resorts to simple homestays and budget hotels in town, with plenty of options in between.
This makes it easy to find a place that matches both your budget and your travel style, especially if you want to stay directly on the beach.
Con Dao
Con Dao is smaller, and that is reflected in the number of accommodations. Still, the overall offer is surprisingly good for its size, especially in and around the town on Con Son Island, where you’ll find a mix of hotels and homestays.
The main limitation is beachfront accommodation: there are only a few resorts directly by the sea, and these are generally in the higher price range.
Winner for accommodation: Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc wins here, simply because it offers far more choice in terms of price ranges, locations, and types of accommodation compared to Con Dao.
Activities & Things to do
Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc offers more places to visit in absolute numbers. However, much of this consists of developed and commercial attractions, such as a long cable car to an offshore island, a safari-style animal park, water parks, and large entertainment complexes.

These types of activities mainly appeal to travelers who want more than just the beach and enjoy having entertainment that is easy to access and well organized.
Con Dao
Con Dao has fewer attractions, but they are more meaningful and appeal to a more specific type of traveler. The focus here is on nature and history: the former Con Dao prison, which plays an important role in Vietnamese history, a national park where you can hike and trek, and beaches where sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs during the right season.

There is also more to see underwater compared to Phu Quoc, and the coastal road is well suited for a short, quiet road trip.
Winner for activities: No clear winner
There is no clear winner here. Phu Quoc stands out for easy entertainment and attractions, while Con Dao is stronger when it comes to nature and history-related experiences.
Diving
Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc is well suited for beginner divers or for those who see diving mainly as a fun addition to a beach stay. The dives are generally easy, with limited depth and calm conditions.

You shouldn’t expect large marine life or particularly vibrant coral; Phu Quoc is not a destination where you come specifically to dive for several days in a row. One or two relaxed dives during your stay fit well here.
Con Dao
Con Dao is clearly more interesting for divers who want to see more. The underwater world is more diverse, with healthier coral and more marine life, especially in the right season.

Con Dao is known for sea turtles, but it’s important to keep expectations realistic: the beaches where they nest and enter the sea are protected, and diving is not allowed in those areas. You may encounter turtles underwater, but not in large numbers. Dugongs also live in the waters around Con Dao, but they are extremely rare and not a reason to visit specifically.
Winner for diving: Con Dao*
In general, Con Dao comes out on top due to its richer underwater environment. However, the choice depends heavily on the season: in the winter months, conditions are often better around Phu Quoc, while Con Dao is clearly the better option in summer.
Tourism & Crowds
Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc is one of Vietnam’s most popular beach destinations. You’ll notice this in the number of resorts, organized tours, and visitors, especially during peak season and around the more well-known beaches.
Con Dao
Con Dao is significantly less visited and receives a much smaller number of travelers. The island feels quieter overall, with less large-scale tourism and noticeably fewer crowds on the beaches and in daily life.
Winner for tourism & crowds: Con Dao
Con Dao stands out here, as it is clearly more peaceful and experiences far less mass tourism than Phu Quoc.

Other beach destinations in Vietnam
Not only deciding between Phu Quoc or Con Dao, but also considering other beach destinations in Vietnam? It’s useful to understand that each region has clear differences, especially when it comes to seasonality and how suitable they are as the final stop of your trip.
Northern Vietnam (such as Cat Ba)
Beaches in northern Vietnam are not ideal as a true beach ending to your trip. They are fine for a short stop during your journey, but not for several days of relaxation.
The dry season here coincides with cooler temperatures, while the warmer months also bring more rain. This makes it difficult to plan the region for a classic beach holiday.
Central Vietnam (such as Hoi An and Da Nang)
Central Vietnam is actually ideal during the summer months. In June, July, and August, the south is in its rainy season, while conditions along the central coast are often excellent for the beach.
This makes it a strong alternative to Phu Quoc during that period. Another advantage is that many Vietnam itineraries already include Hoi An and/or Da Nang, so you can easily add beach time without needing extra domestic flights.
Southern Vietnam (such as Mui Ne)
If you prefer not to add extra domestic flights to your trip—or even avoid two flights to and from Phu Quoc or Con Dao—Mui Ne is a practical alternative.
Mui Ne is located on the mainland and can be easily reached by car from Ho Chi Minh City. It is best known for its beaches, resorts, and strong winds (ideal for kite- and windsurfing), and works well for travelers who value simplicity and straightforward logistics.
