About Con Dao and its airport
Con Dao island – what kind of destination is it?
Con Dao is located in southern Vietnam and is not a single island, but an archipelago of 16 islands. The main island, where almost everything happens, is Con Son. This is where you’ll find the airport, the main town, and most hotels. Compared to places like Phu Quoc, Con Son is relatively small and much less developed, attracting travelers who are looking for quiet beaches, nature, and a more remote island experience rather than a wide range of resorts or nightlife.
At the same time, the island offers a mix of nature and history. You’ll find remote beaches, excellent turtle watching in season, and a protected national park both on land and underwater, alongside the well-known prison complex that reflects Con Dao’s past. The airport is located in the northern part of Con Son, while the town and most accommodations are in the central area of the island, about 20 to 30 minutes away.

Con Dao Airport – terminal & aircraft limitations
Con Dao Airport is small, and that directly explains why flights are limited.

There is a single runway, and its size means that only smaller aircraft can land here. In practice, this is mainly turboprop planes like the ATR72. Larger jet aircraft such as Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 are currently not able to operate regular flights to Con Dao.

There are plans to upgrade the airport so it can handle larger aircraft in the future, but these are still in the planning stage. Until that happens, capacity remains limited, which is one of the main reasons flights to Con Dao are relatively expensive and not as frequent.

The terminal itself is very basic. It’s a small building with minimal facilities, no jet bridges, and a simple layout. You walk to the plane or take the bus, check-in is quick, and luggage is handled without much waiting time.

From a traveler’s perspective, this actually works in your favor. You won’t deal with long queues or crowded halls. After landing, you’re usually outside and in a taxi within minutes.
At the same time, it reinforces the overall character of Con Dao: remote, less developed, and still relatively untouched compared to more accessible islands in Vietnam.
Direct flight options
Direct flights to Con Dao are limited, mainly because the airport can only handle smaller aircraft. For a long time, there were only a few daily flights operated by Vietnam Airlines (via VASCO). Recently, the situation has improved, with more frequency on key routes and additional airlines like VietJet entering the market. Still, availability remains relatively low compared to other destinations, and schedules can change depending on season, demand, or operational factors.
Direct flight Ho Chi Minh City – Con Dao
This is by far the most important and reliable route.
Most flights to Con Dao depart from Ho Chi Minh City, and this route operates year-round with multiple daily departures. If you’re planning your trip, this is the connection you’ll almost always rely on.
Airlines:
- Vietnam Airlines (often operated by VASCO with ATR72 aircraft)
- VietJet Air (newer addition, usually with slightly larger aircraft depending on conditions)
Flight time:
- Around 45–60 minutes
Because of the short distance and relatively high demand, prices can fluctuate quite a bit, especially during weekends, holidays, and the turtle season.
Direct flight Hanoi – Con Dao
Direct flights from Hanoi to Con Dao do exist, but they are far less consistent.
There are usually only a few flights per week, and availability can vary depending on the time of year and airline scheduling. In some periods, you may find direct flights, while in others they disappear completely from the system.
At the moment, it appears that some airlines (like VietJet) only operate this route during certain periods, and flights may not be available year-round. This can be due to demand, aircraft limitations, or operational planning rather than a fixed seasonal pattern.
Airlines:
- Vietnam Airlines (limited frequency)
- VietJet Air (periodic / not always available)
Flight time:
- Around 2 hours 10–30 minutes
Important:
If you cannot find a direct flight from Hanoi, this is normal. In that case, you’ll need to fly via Ho Chi Minh City, which is the most reliable alternative and often easier to plan.
Direct flight Can Tho – Con Dao
Flights from Can Tho to Con Dao are available, but very limited.
This route is mainly used by travelers combining Con Dao with the Mekong Delta. It does not operate with high frequency, and schedules can be irregular.
Airlines:
- Vietnam Airlines / VASCO (typically)
Flight time:
- Around 45 minutes
Because of the limited number of flights, this route is more of a niche option. It can be very convenient if it fits your itinerary, but it’s not something you should fully rely on without checking availability in advance.
Flying from other destinations to Con Dao
If you’re coming from destinations like Da Nang, Nha Trang, Da Lat, or even Hanoi at a time when direct flights are not available, you will need to transit. In practice, almost all routes to Con Dao go via Ho Chi Minh City, which acts as the main hub for the island.
This is usually straightforward and easy to arrange. Airlines like Vietnam Airlines often sell combined tickets (for example Da Nang → Ho Chi Minh City → Con Dao), meaning your connection is handled within one booking. In many cases, your luggage will be checked through to Con Dao, so you don’t need to collect and re-check it yourself — although it’s always worth confirming this when booking or at check-in.
At Ho Chi Minh City airport, transfers are relatively smooth. Domestic connections are handled within the same airport, and with the newer terminal in operation, the process has improved further. If your flights are on the same ticket, you can often transfer without going through full check-in again, saving time and avoiding long queues.
In reality, even if you start your journey elsewhere in Vietnam, you’ll almost always pass through Ho Chi Minh City on your way to Con Dao.
From Con Dao Airport to your hotel
Once you arrive at Con Dao Airport, getting to your hotel is straightforward. The island is small, and most accommodations are within a 20 to 30-minute drive from the airport.

Hotel transfers
Many resorts and higher-end hotels offer airport transfers, often included in the room rate. This is especially common for mid-range and upscale properties.

Smaller hotels and homestays may also offer transfers, sometimes for a small fee. In many cases, this is still cheaper (and easier) than arranging a taxi yourself.
It’s always a good idea to check this in advance and confirm your arrival time, so they can be ready when you land.
Taxis
If your hotel doesn’t offer a transfer, taking a taxi is simple.
Taxis are waiting outside the small terminal when flights arrive, so you don’t need to pre-book. The ride to most hotels in town takes around 20 to 30 minutes.
Typical prices:
- Around 150,000 to 250,000 VND depending on distance.
There are no ride-hailing services like Grab cars on Con Dao. The Grab app may still work, but it will connect you to regular taxis rather than private drivers.
Tip: Watch planes land at Dam Trau Beach
If you’re flying to or from Con Dao, one of the best spots to see planes land is Dam Trau Beach, located right next to the airport runway. Planes fly low over the beach during landing, which makes for a surprisingly cool experience — without it ever feeling busy, since there are only a limited number of flights per day.

What makes this spot even better is that Dam Trau is not just about the planes. It’s also one of the nicest and most comfortable beaches on the island, with soft sand, calm water, and some natural shade in the morning. You can easily combine a visit here with some beach time, especially if you go around a flight arrival or departure.
FAQ & tips for Con Dao Airport and booking flights
When to book your flights
Flights to Con Dao are limited, so booking early is important.
Especially during high season, holidays, and weekends, flights can sell out quickly. It’s not uncommon that flights are already fully booked one to two weeks in advance. If your travel dates are fixed, it’s best to book as soon as possible.
As a general rule:
- Book at least a few weeks ahead for normal travel periods
- Book even earlier for peak periods (Vietnamese holidays, summer, turtle season)
Vietnam Airlines or VietJet?
You’ll mainly choose between Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air.
Vietnam Airlines is the national carrier and is generally seen as more reliable and punctual. It usually includes checked baggage in the ticket price, which can make the total cost more predictable.
VietJet Air is a low-cost airline. Tickets can be cheaper, but extras like checked luggage are not included by default and need to be added separately.
Because flights to Con Dao are short and operated with smaller aircraft, the difference in onboard experience is limited. You won’t need entertainment or extensive services for a flight of under an hour.
In practice, the best choice often comes down to:
- Schedule
- Availability
- Total price including luggage
How early to arrive at Con Dao Airport
Con Dao Airport is very small and efficient.
Check-in, security, and boarding are usually quick and straightforward. In many cases, the entire process can be done within 20 to 30 minutes.
For most travelers, arriving 60 to 90 minutes before departure is more than enough. There’s no need to arrive several hours in advance like at major airports.
Alternative to flying: ferry to Con Dao
If you prefer not to fly, it’s also possible to reach Con Dao by boat.
There are ferry connections from the mainland, mainly from the Mekong Delta (Tran De near Soc Trang) and Vung Tau. Travel times are significantly longer than flying, and schedules can be affected by weather conditions.
For some travelers, especially those combining Con Dao with the Mekong Delta, this can be a good alternative. For most, flying remains the fastest and most practical option.

Extra tip: flexibility helps
Because flights are limited and can change, having some flexibility in your travel dates or route can make a big difference.
If your preferred flight is full or too expensive:
- Try flying one day earlier or later
- Check connections via Ho Chi Minh City
- Consider combining flight + ferry if it fits your itinerary
This flexibility often helps you find better availability and prices.
