From Ninh Binh to Phong Nha – Direct bus, train, flight & car

Traveling from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha connects the karst landscapes of the north with the vast cave country of central Vietnam, a journey of around 400 kilometers. There is no quick or direct link, so the trip takes time whichever way you go, and the right choice depends on your budget and how much comfort you want. This guide covers the direct bus, the private car, the train, and flying, and explains an important detail about Dong Hoi that affects two of them.

About the route from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha

Ninh Binh and Phong Nha lie roughly 400 kilometers apart, and the distance alone makes this a longer trip than most northern routes. The other thing to understand is what Phong Nha actually is. It is not a city or even a large town, but a national park area, with the small town of Son Trach at its base, made up mostly of hotels, homestays, and tour operators serving visitors to the caves. Because of that, it has no train station and no airport of its own, which shapes every option here. Two ways, the bus and a private car, run all the way to Phong Nha itself. The other two, the train and the flight, only reach Dong Hoi, the nearest city, from where you cover the last stretch separately.

Phong Nha is one of Vietnam’s most rewarding destinations for anyone drawn to nature and caves. It is the gateway to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO site holding some of the largest caves on earth, including Son Doong, alongside easier-to-reach caves, jungle, and rivers. It is quieter and less developed than the big tourist centers, which is a large part of its appeal.

Traveling via Dong Hoi: why and how it works

Before the options below, there is one thing to get clear, because it affects two of them. The train and the flight do not actually reach Phong Nha. They both end in Dong Hoi, the coastal city that acts as the main transport gateway to the area, since Phong Nha has no station or airport. From Dong Hoi you still have a final leg to cover.

Dong Hoi sits around 40 to 45 kilometers from Phong Nha, roughly an hour by road. Once you arrive, whether by train at the station or by plane at the airport, you continue to Phong Nha by taxi, shared shuttle, or local bus. A taxi is the quickest and runs about 350,000 to 500,000 VND (roughly $14 to $20), while a shared shuttle or the public bus is cheaper but slower. So when reading the train and flight options below, keep in mind that this Dong Hoi to Phong Nha leg is part of the journey.

For the full detail on that last stretch, see our guide on how to get from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha.

Option 1: By bus from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha

Why choose the bus

The bus is the most popular way to travel from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha, and the only budget option that runs all the way there. Unlike the train and flight, direct buses go straight to Phong Nha, so there is no separate transfer at the end. Most are sleeper buses, which suits the long distance, letting you rest on the way.

How it works

The trip takes around 6.5 to 9 hours depending on the operator and traffic, with pickup in the Ninh Binh or Tam Coc area and drop-off in Phong Nha. Several companies run the route, including HK Buslines, Queen Cafe Bus, and The Long Travel, with fares from around 400,000 VND (roughly $16). One thing to plan for: many are overnight services that arrive in Phong Nha very early, sometimes around 3 or 4 in the morning, so let your accommodation know in advance so you can check in or wait comfortably on arrival.

Who it is for

The bus suits budget travelers and anyone who wants a direct trip without changing transport in Dong Hoi. It is the default choice for most people on this route, as long as you are comfortable with a long ride and, on night services, an early arrival.

Option 2: By private car from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha

Why choose a private car

A private car is the most comfortable and flexible way to travel this route, and like the bus, it goes directly to Phong Nha with no transfer. Your driver collects you at your accommodation and takes you straight there, with the freedom to stop along the way. Thanks to the expressway that now covers most of the route, the drive is quicker than it used to be, at around 5.5 hours without stops, making it the fastest option on the ground.

Cost and how it compares

You hire a car with a driver and choose the vehicle size for your group. This is the priciest option by far, with private transfers starting from around 9,700,000 VND (roughly $370) for a small car, per car rather than per person. That makes it hard to justify for solo travelers or couples, but for a larger group splitting the cost, the comfort and speed can be worth it.

See how it works in our guide to renting a car with a driver in Vietnam.

Who this option is for

A private car suits families or groups who value comfort, speed, and a direct door-to-door trip, and who can share the high cost. For anyone on a budget, the bus is the far cheaper way to reach Phong Nha directly.

Option 3: By train from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha

Why choose the train

The train is a scenic and comfortable way to cover the distance, running south through the countryside on the north-south line. It is safer and more spacious than a bus, and a genuine pleasure if you enjoy rail travel. The key thing to remember is that it only goes as far as Dong Hoi, so the final leg to Phong Nha is separate, as covered above.

How it works

Trains leave from Ninh Binh railway station and reach Dong Hoi in around 7.5 to 9.5 hours. Because of the length, an overnight train is the sensible choice, as you sleep through the journey, save a night’s accommodation, and do not lose a full day. A soft sleeper in a 4-berth cabin is the most comfortable pick. Just remember to add the roughly 1-hour transfer from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha on arrival.

Who it is for

The train suits travelers who prefer a comfortable, scenic overnight journey to a long bus ride, and who do not mind the extra transfer at the end. If you want to reach Phong Nha directly without changing, the bus is simpler, but for comfort over the distance, the train is a strong choice.

Option 4: By plane from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha

Why choose to fly

Flying is the fastest way to cover the distance, though it involves the most steps and does not run direct. Since Ninh Binh has no airport, you first travel back to Hanoi, fly to Dong Hoi, and then transfer to Phong Nha. Despite the multiple legs, the short flight time makes it the quickest option overall, which suits travelers on a tight schedule.

How it works

The trip has three parts. First you travel from Ninh Binh to Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, around 3 hours by road. Then you fly from Hanoi to Dong Hoi airport, a flight of about 1 hour 15 minutes, with Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, and VietJet all serving the route. Finally you cover the roughly 1-hour transfer from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha. Adding it all up, the door-to-door time is still shorter than the bus or train, but the fares and the number of connections make it the most involved option.

Who it is for

Flying suits travelers who are short on time and happy to pay more for speed, especially those who were passing through Hanoi anyway. For most people, though, the extra cost and the several changes make the direct bus or the overnight train the more practical choice.

Conclusion: what is the best option for Ninh Binh to Phong Nha

The best way from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha comes down to your budget, your schedule, and how much comfort you want over the long distance. A quick way to choose:

Bus – the most popular and affordable, running direct to Phong Nha in around 6.5 to 9 hours, from about 400,000 VND. Best for budget travelers, though night buses arrive very early.

Private car – the fastest on the ground at around 5.5 hours and the most comfortable, going direct, but expensive at around 9,700,000 VND per car. Best for groups who can split the cost.

Train – scenic and comfortable, best taken overnight to Dong Hoi in around 7.5 to 9.5 hours, then a short transfer to Phong Nha. Best for comfort over a long journey.

Plane – the fastest overall but with the most steps, flying via Hanoi and Dong Hoi. Best for tight schedules and those not counting the cost.

For most travelers it comes down to this: take the direct bus for an affordable, no-transfer trip, or the overnight train for more comfort if you do not mind the change in Dong Hoi. Fly only if speed matters most, and choose a private car if you are a group wanting the quickest, most comfortable ride and can share the cost.
