Chapa Express — what it is and what sets it apart
Chapa Express has been running since 2014, making it one of the longer-established premium operators on the Hanoi to Lao Cai line. Like all private trains on this route, it operates as carriages attached to the regular Vietnam Railways service — the track is shared, the schedule is fixed, and the ride is noisy regardless of which operator you book. What sets Chapa apart is the cabin design. Where most overnight trains on this route use generic wooden interiors, Chapa’s cabins draw on the visual culture of the H’Mong and Dzao ethnic groups — brocade patterns, traditional motifs, references to Dong Ho folk painting. It is a more considered aesthetic than most competitors offer.
Chapa also has a dedicated lounge at both Hanoi and Lao Cai stations with complimentary drinks and snacks, WiFi, charging sockets, and shower facilities. Beyond Sapa, Chapa runs on the Hanoi to Hue and Hanoi to Da Nang routes as well, though the Lao Cai service is the most popular by far.
The Chapa Express route: Hanoi to Lao Cai
The train covers 294 kilometers between Hanoi and Lao Cai overnight, departing Hanoi at either 10pm or 10:40pm depending on the service, and arriving at Lao Cai around 6am. As it pulls out of Hanoi Station it passes through Train Street — the narrow stretch where bars and cafes line both sides of the tracks. From inside the carriage you are watching the tourists watch you, which is a small but memorable moment at the start of the journey. After that it is dark outside and there is nothing to see until morning.
Lao Cai is a border town and not a destination in itself. From the station, Sapa is another 33 kilometers up the mountain — around 50 minutes by road. Sapa is one of the most visited destinations in northern Vietnam, known for its rice terraces, mountain trails, and villages belonging to ethnic minority groups including the H’Mong and Red Dao. The overnight train is the most practical way to get there from Hanoi, combining transport and a night’s accommodation into one.
What to expect on board
The Chapa Lounge
Chapa has a dedicated lounge on the second floor of Hanoi Station and another at Lao Cai Station. Both offer complimentary drinks and snacks, WiFi, charging sockets, and shower facilities. The lounge opens from 5:20am to 10pm. It is a genuinely useful feature — arriving at the station to a comfortable waiting area rather than the main concourse makes a real difference before a late-night departure.
The honest note: the lounge gets busy close to the 10pm departure. If you want a seat and plan to use the shower, arrive at least 45 minutes early. When it fills up it loses some of its appeal.
The cabins
Chapa offers six cabin categories, from the Deluxe 4-berth shared option up to the Grand Suite Queen at the top end. The interiors reference H’Mong brocade patterns and Dong Ho folk painting — more distinctive than the standard wood-paneled look of most trains on this route. All cabins have air conditioning, reading lights, WiFi, power sockets, and a lockable door.
Bed dimensions are 70cm by 180cm — comfortable for most people but worth knowing if you are tall. In the 4-berth Deluxe cabin, four people sharing is workable but space is limited. The private VIP and Suite cabins fold the upper bunks against the wall when not in use, which frees up considerably more space during the journey.
One thing to be aware of: cabin quality can vary between carriages. Some passengers on return journeys have been allocated an older carriage with harder beds, less privacy, and a lower standard bathroom than on the outbound trip. It does not happen consistently but it is worth knowing before you go.
Amenities included
Bedding is replaced after every journey. Each passenger receives bottled water, snacks, a toiletry kit, slippers, and earplugs. A beer or soft drink is also included. Morning coffee is available to order but charged separately — it arrives just before pulling into Lao Cai, so factor that into your expectations.
The ride
The track from Hanoi to Lao Cai is old and the noise throughout the night is real. Earplugs help but do not eliminate it. Cabins at the ends of carriages, directly above the wheel sets, tend to be noisier than those in the middle — worth requesting a middle cabin when booking if you are a light sleeper.
Ticket prices
Chapa offers multiple cabin categories. The Deluxe ticket is priced per person; all private cabin options are priced per cabin regardless of how many guests.
| Cabin | Configuration | Price (from) |
|---|---|---|
| Deluxe | 4-berth shared (per person) | $43 |
| VIP | Private, 2 foldable twin beds (per cabin) | On request |
| Suite | Private, 2 twin beds (per cabin) | On request |
| Premium Suite | Private (per cabin, SP7 only) | On request |
| Grand Suite Queen | Private, most premium (per cabin, SP7 only) | On request |
The Grand Suite Queen and Premium Suite are only available on the SP7 10:40pm departure — not the standard 10pm SP3 service. If these are the cabins you want, make sure you are booking the correct departure.
Prices change regularly and the table above may not reflect current rates. Always check current pricing on the Chapa Express website before booking.
Practical tips and how to book
How to book
Tickets can be booked directly through the Chapa Express website or through a travel agency. Book in advance — the VIP and Suite cabins are limited and fill up quickly, particularly on weekends and during peak travel months.
Book your Sapa trip with Local Vietnam. We arrange everything around your train journey — Chapa Express tickets, transfer from Lao Cai to Sapa, accommodation, and activities including trekking, homestays, and sightseeing. Contact us for a hassle-free trip.
Two departure times
Chapa runs two nightly departures from Hanoi. The SP3 at 10pm is the standard service covering all cabin categories. The SP7 at 10:40pm is the only departure with access to the Grand Suite Queen and Premium Suite cabins. Check which service your booking is on before confirming.
Arrive early for the lounge
The lounge is on the second floor of Hanoi Station. If you plan to shower before boarding, arrive at least an hour before departure. Close to 10pm it fills up and the experience is noticeably less comfortable. Staff from the lounge escort you to your carriage at boarding time.
Watch out at the station entrance
On the ground floor of Hanoi Station, staff unrelated to Chapa will approach you offering shuttle transfers to Sapa. Go straight to the second floor to the Chapa Lounge before making any decisions about onward transport. Chapa’s own transfer options can be arranged when booking your ticket.
Transfer from Lao Cai to Sapa
Sapa is 33 kilometers from Lao Cai Station — around 50 minutes by road. Chapa offers both shuttle and private transfer options bookable alongside your train ticket. There is no Grab service between Lao Cai and Sapa, so arrange transport in advance rather than figuring it out on arrival at 6am.
Getting from Lao Cai Station to Sapa requires a separate transfer by road — see our guide on how to get from Lao Cai to Sapa for all the options.
Cabin position
Request a cabin in the middle of the carriage when booking. End cabins sit above the wheel sets and the noise and vibration are noticeably worse there.

Is the Chapa Express worth it?
For the overnight journey to Sapa, Chapa is one of the better options on the route. The lounge at both ends adds genuine comfort to what is otherwise a late-night departure and an early-morning arrival. The cabin design is more thoughtful than most competitors, the bedding is replaced after every journey, and the overall organization is solid.
The ride is the main reality check. The Hanoi to Lao Cai track is rough and noisy throughout the night — earplugs help but do not solve it entirely. This is the same for every operator on this line and not something Chapa can control, but it is worth going in prepared rather than expecting a smooth night’s sleep.
The one inconsistency worth flagging is cabin quality on return journeys. A notable number of passengers have received an older, lower-quality carriage heading back to Hanoi than on the outbound trip. It does not happen to everyone, but it happens enough to mention. If consistency matters to you, confirm your carriage type clearly at booking for both legs.
At the price point Chapa sits at the upper end of what is available on this route. That is justified for most travelers — the lounge, the design, and the service level are all a step above the mid-range alternatives. If budget is the priority, solid cheaper options exist on the same line. But for a comfortable, well-organized overnight journey to Sapa, Chapa delivers.
