About the route from Hue to Ninh Binh
Hue and Ninh Binh sit roughly 570 kilometers apart, which makes this one of the longer journeys travelers take between central and northern Vietnam. Every way of making it takes a good part of a day, so it is usually done overnight to save time. Ninh Binh has no airport of its own, so flying is not direct and runs via Hanoi, as explained below. A private car is not really worth considering here, since the drive alone runs about 8 hours without stops, and closer to 10 to 12 with breaks and meals, which is a long way to sit in a car.
One thing worth knowing before you book: most travelers do not stay in Ninh Binh city itself, but in the Tam Coc or Trang An area a few kilometers away, where the boat trips, caves, and viewpoints are. Ninh Binh is one of the most scenic parts of the north, a landscape of limestone karst rising from rivers and rice fields, often called “Halong Bay on land.” The draw is getting out onto the water at Trang An or Tam Coc and climbing the steps at Mua Cave for the view across the valley.

Rather have the whole journey arranged, Phong Nha included? Our Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, Hue, and Hoi An tour links these stops over six days by train and private car, taking in the DMZ, the Phong Nha jungle and caves, and Hue’s imperial sights along the way. It runs in either direction, so it works whether you are heading north to Ninh Binh or south to Hoi An.
Option 1: By train from Hue to Ninh Binh
Why choose the train
The train is the best all-round way to travel from Hue to Ninh Binh. It is more comfortable than a bus over this distance, with room to move and a proper bed on the sleeper services, and the ride up the coast and through the countryside is a scenic one. Both cities have central stations, so you avoid the out-of-town bus stops, which makes the whole trip simpler.
How it works
Trains run from Hue railway station to Ninh Binh railway station in around 11 to 13 hours on the north-south line. Because of the length, an overnight train makes the most sense, letting you sleep through the journey and save a night’s accommodation. A soft sleeper in a 4-berth cabin is the most comfortable choice, with fares from around 500,000 VND (roughly $20) for a soft seat and more for a berth. Hue station is a short walk or 10-minute taxi from the center, and Ninh Binh station is central too, though it sits about 8 kilometers from Tam Coc, so you will want a short taxi or Grab if you are staying there.
Who it is for
The train suits almost everyone on this route, especially travelers who want a comfortable overnight journey and would rather arrive rested than spend the same hours upright on a bus. Unless you are set on saving every dong, this is the option to choose.
Option 2: By direct bus from Hue to Ninh Binh
Why choose the bus
The direct bus is the cheapest way to travel from Hue to Ninh Binh, and it runs the whole way without a change. These are sleeper buses with reclining berths rather than seats, which helps on a journey this long, and they are a solid choice for budget travelers who do not mind less comfort than the train.
How it works
The trip takes around 10 to 12.5 hours depending on the operator, usually overnight, with pickup at the bus company’s office in Hue. Several companies run the route, including HK Buslines, Queen Cafe Bus, and Green Trips, with fares from around 400,000 VND (roughly $16). Most are night buses that arrive in the early morning, and many drop at the Tam Coc area rather than Ninh Binh city, which is handy if you are staying there. As with any early arrival, let your accommodation know your timing so you can check in or wait comfortably.
Who it is for
The bus suits budget travelers who want the cheapest direct option and are comfortable with a sleeper berth over the train. For a bit more comfort at a similar overnight saving, though, the train is the better pick.
Option 3: By plane from Hue to Ninh Binh
Why choose to fly
Flying is the fastest way to cover the distance, but it is not direct and involves several steps. Since Ninh Binh has no airport, you fly from Hue to Hanoi and then continue by road. It only really makes sense if you want to reach Ninh Binh in daylight hours rather than travel overnight, since once you add the transfers, the time saved over the night train is smaller than it first looks.
How it works
The trip comes in three parts. First you fly from Phu Bai Airport in Hue to Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, a flight of about 1 hour 15 minutes, served by Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and Bamboo Airways. Then you travel from Hanoi down to Ninh Binh by road, around 2.5 to 3 hours by limousine van or private car. Counting the airport time and both transfers, the door-to-door total comes to roughly 5 to 7 hours, and it is the most expensive option.
Who it is for
Flying suits travelers who are short on time, want to arrive during the day, and do not mind paying more for the several connections. For most people, though, the overnight train covers the same distance more cheaply and drops you right in the center, which is why it remains the better choice on this route.
Tip: add Phong Nha to your trip
Phong Nha sits directly on the route between Hue and Ninh Binh, which makes it easy to break the journey there rather than pass straight through. It is one of the most rewarding places in Vietnam for anyone drawn to nature and adventure, home to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and some of the largest caves on earth, along with jungle, rivers, and a quiet, laid-back town. Spending a couple of days here turns a long transfer into two shorter, more interesting legs, and it is well worth considering if your schedule allows.

Conclusion: what is the best option for Hue to Ninh Binh
The best way from Hue to Ninh Binh comes down to your budget and how you want to spend the long journey. A quick way to choose:
Train – the best all-round choice, comfortable and scenic, best taken overnight in around 11 to 13 hours, from about 500,000 VND, dropping you at the central Ninh Binh station.
Direct bus – the cheapest, a direct overnight sleeper of around 10 to 12.5 hours from about 400,000 VND, arriving early morning, often at Tam Coc.
Plane – the fastest but not direct, flying via Hanoi and continuing by road, best only if you want to arrive during the day and do not mind the cost and connections.
For most travelers it comes down to this: take the overnight train for the best balance of comfort, cost, and a central arrival, or the direct bus if you want the cheapest way through. Fly only if saving daytime hours matters more than the price. And if you have time, breaking the trip in Phong Nha is well worth it.
