The catch is at the Nha Trang end: flights leave from Cam Ranh Airport, about 35 kilometers and 45 minutes south of the city, so you need to add that transfer plus check-in time to the hour in the air. What used to be a long, tiring ride is now around six to seven hours, cheap, and frequent, with departures through the day and night. Modern sleeper and cabin buses make the trip comfortable, and once you factor in the transfer out to Cam Ranh airport, the bus is closer to the flight on total time than you might expect.

The train is the most scenic and relaxed way south, following the coast for much of the way past Cam Ranh Bay, the Phan Thiet sand dunes, and fruit orchards nearer Saigon. It is slower than the bus, but roomier, with a proper bed if you take an overnight sleeper, and many travelers find it the most pleasant way to make the trip. It is a nicer experience than the bus, if you have the extra hour or two.

Trains run from Nha Trang Railway Station, central and easy to reach, to Saigon Railway Station in District 3, taking around eight to nine hours depending on the service. There are about six departures a day, a mix of daytime and overnight, with classes from a soft seat up to a four-berth soft sleeper; for the distance, a sleeper berth is worth it.
