Option 2: Fly from Hanoi (Noi Bai) to Ho Chi Minh City

Flying out of Hanoi instead makes sense in a few situations. Noi Bai has far more flights south, so if the Cat Bi schedule does not suit your timing, Hanoi almost certainly will. It is also the obvious choice if you left your main luggage at a Hanoi hotel rather than bringing it on the cruise, or if you were planning to spend more time in the capital before flying out anyway. The downside is the longer, less predictable drive from the bay, which can run into traffic on the approach to the city.
Getting from the bay to the airport
Noi Bai Airport is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours from the bay by road, longer than the run to Cat Bi and more prone to delays near Hanoi. Many cruises include a shuttle back to the Hanoi Old Quarter, which is handy if you are stopping in the city first or collecting luggage, and from there it is a short onward hop to the airport. The trip means first reaching Hanoi from the bay, then travelling the length of the country from there. The main option is the north-south Reunification train, which takes somewhere around 30 to 35 hours from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, with a long-distance bus taking longer still. Neither is a sensible way to cover the distance on its own.
