The valley’s unique charm lies in its combination of dramatic landscapes, cultural richness, and the warmth of its local communities. The Tay ethnic group predominantly inhabits this area, and their traditional stilt houses dot the valley, adding to its picturesque appeal.
Highlights & things to do in Bac Son Valley
1. Bac Son Valley Viewpoint
For a panoramic vista of the valley’s grandeur, head to Na Lay Peak. The hike to the summit is moderately challenging, but the reward is a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, you can appreciate the vastness of the valley, the intricate patterns of the rice paddies, and the dramatic silhouette of the limestone mountains.
2. Quynh Son Village
Quynh Son Village, located just 2 kilometers north of Bac Son town, is a must-visit for those interested in cultural experiences. The village is home to over 400 traditional stilt houses of the Tay people, set against a backdrop of mountains and rice fields.
Quynh Son is not only known for its historical sites but also for its unique craft of making “double tiles.”
These tiles, used for roofing, are a traditional product of the village and have been passed down through generations. Visitors can witness the tile-making process, explore the village, and learn about the local customs and way of life.
3. Bac Son Flower Valley
Bac Son Flower Valley, located in Lan Khoang Village, Tran Yen Commune, is a vibrant destination for flower lovers. The valley was originally a corn farming area but has since been transformed into a sprawling 20-hectare flower field, attracting visitors with its colorful blooms. The fields are especially popular among Vietnamese tourists who come to take photos amidst the wildflowers. Entrance to the flower valley costs 50,000 VND per person, and it’s a beautiful spot to enjoy nature and the surrounding mountain scenery.
4. Tam Canh Pass & Monument
Tam Canh Pass, located on National Highway 1B, offers travelers a scenic drive through limestone mountains and lush greenery.
The pass is also a site of historical significance, as it was a key location during the Bac Son Uprising in 1940. A monument and stele house have been erected at the pass to commemorate this event. While the pass itself may not be the most dramatic in Vietnam, the combination of natural beauty and historical importance makes it a worthwhile stop.
5. Mam Stream & Cave
Mam Stream is a peaceful spot about 24 kilometers from Bac Son town in Quang Trung I village, Chien Thang commune. This area offers a tranquil retreat with its clear, cool stream flowing gently over a wide, shallow bed, creating natural pools perfect for a refreshing swim on a warm day.
While the surrounding scenery is pleasant, featuring green hills and a calm atmosphere, it’s important to manage expectations—this is a simple, serene location rather than a dramatic natural wonder. The nearby Kheng Tao Cave adds a touch of exploration, though it’s not particularly large or impressive.
Popular with local families for picnics and relaxation, the area does have some basic facilities, but the presence of man-made structures like bridges and flower baskets may slightly detract from the natural setting. Overall, Mam Stream & Cave is a nice, low-key stop for those already exploring Bac Son Valley, offering a chance to cool off and enjoy a slower pace, though it’s not a must-see destination.
6. Pac Mo Lake
Pac Mo Lake, just 2 kilometers from Bac Son town, is a scenic spot known for its clear waters and tranquil surroundings. The peaceful atmosphere and beautiful reflections on the lake make it a great place for photography or a quiet afternoon stroll. It is also a popular spot for locals to fish.
7. Medical Plant Farm
The Medical Plant Farm in Bac Son is a unique attraction where visitors can learn about traditional Vietnamese medicine. The farm is beautifully landscaped, with a variety of medicinal plants grown in harmony with nature. Visitors can explore the garden, learn about the uses of different plants, and even purchase traditional remedies. The farm offers a peaceful retreat and an educational experience in a picturesque setting.
8. Nong Luc Communal House
Nong Luc Communal House, located in Hung Vu Commune, is a small but historically significant site. Built in 1927 during the Nguyen Dynasty, the communal house combines traditional Northern Delta architecture with the stilt house style of the Tay people. The house was the site of an important meeting during the Bac Son Uprising, and today it serves as a national historical relic. While the house itself is modest, the surrounding scenery and its historical significance make it a worthwhile stop.
