Traveling to Bac Son Valley involves first reaching Lang Son City. Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, has numerous transportation options to reach Lang Son City. Compared to other northern destinations like Ha Giang, Sapa, and Cao Bang, Lang Son is relatively close, being just a 3.5-hour drive from Hanoi. For this distance, taking a limousine bus is recommended. These buses are very affordable and provide a comfortable journey.
Direct Transportation from Hanoi to Bac Son Valley
Uniquely, there is a direct transportation option from Hanoi to Bac Son Valley. A company operates 7-seater shared cars with 8 scheduled trips daily between Hanoi and Bac Son Valley. The earliest trip departs at 10 AM, arriving in Bac Son Valley around 1:30 PM, while the latest trip leaves at 7 PM, arriving at 10:30 PM. The cost is 250,000 VND (approximately $10-12 USD), and the journey takes around 3.5 hours.
This option is highly convenient, but keep in mind that Bac Son Valley has limited options for renting a car with a driver or a motorbike, so it’s best to arrange your transportation before you arrive.

Driving Motorbike:
If you prefer to explore on your own, renting a motorbike is a popular option. Lang Son town has a few rental shops, and in Bac Son Valley, you can arrange motorbike rentals through your accommodation. Prices typically range from 100,000 VND to 150,000 VND per day. Just about an hour’s drive from Bac Son Valley lies Huu Lien, a hidden gem even more off the beaten track. This tranquil area offers a perfect escape into nature, with lush mountains, serene lakes, and sprawling grasslands. In Huu Lien, you can kayak on the picturesque Nong Dzung Lake, explore the expansive Dong Lam Grassland, and experience the local culture by visiting traditional villages. It’s a great spot to unwind and soak in the peaceful countryside of Northern Vietnam. If you have the time, Huu Lien makes an excellent addition to your Bac Son Valley adventure.
Exploring northern Vietnam
Bac Son Valley is perfect as part of a more extensive northern Vietnam tour. It can serve as your first stop before Hanoi or your last stop before heading back. A great option is to continue into Cao Bang Province to the west. Although eastwards you have the stunning mountains of Binh Lieu, part of Quang Ninh Province, the police are strict about letting foreigners travel there due to its proximity to the Chinese border.
