Phan Thiet Railway Station is the only train station serving Phan Thiet city and the main arrival point for travelers heading to the beaches of Mui Ne. It sits at the end of a short branch line off Vietnam's main north-south railway, with one direct daily service to and from Saigon — making it a simple but limited connection. This guide covers everything you need to know before you travel: the train schedule and routes, what the station is like, how to get to Mui Ne from here, and how to buy your tickets.

Phan Thiet Railway Station – a small station on a branch line

Phan Thiet Railway Station sits on the western edge of the city, about 3 km northwest of the town center. It is a small, no-frills station — functional, but don’t expect much beyond the basics. The current building dates to 2012, when the station was relocated to its present site on Le Duan road. The original station area, however, goes back to 1903, when a French-era warehouse was built here during the early development of the regional railway network.

The station sits at the end of a 15 km branch line that splits off from the main north-south railway at Binh Thuan station. This matters practically: because of that branch line setup, Phan Thiet only has direct train connections to stations between Binh Thuan and Saigon. There are no direct trains from here to Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hue, or Hanoi. If you are coming from or heading to anywhere north of Binh Thuan, you will need to change at Binh Thuan station and catch a mainline service from there.

For most travelers, the station serves one purpose: getting between Saigon and Phan Thiet, with Mui Ne as the final destination. It does that job well enough.

Train routes and schedule of Phan Thiet Railway Station

Phan Thiet has one direct train route: to and from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). The journey covers roughly 187 km and takes about 4 hours each way.

The two trains that run this route daily are SPT1 and SPT2:

  • SPT2 — departs Saigon at approximately 06:45, arrives Phan Thiet at approximately 10:45
  • SPT1 — departs Phan Thiet at approximately 13:00, arrives Saigon at approximately 17:10

On public holidays and select busy weekends, Vietnam Railways occasionally adds extra services under the codes SPT3 and SPT4. These are not regular trains — they run only on specific dates. Check dsvn.vn for your travel date to see what is available.

Both SPT1 and SPT2 stop at several stations along the way, including Di An, Bien Hoa, Long Khanh, Suoi Kiet, and Binh Thuan. For most travelers these intermediate stops are irrelevant, but Binh Thuan is worth knowing about: if the direct train times do not work for you, you can take any mainline SE train between Saigon and Binh Thuan station, then cover the remaining 16 km to Phan Thiet by taxi. From Binh Thuan to Mui Ne is around 38 km.

One thing that makes this route unusual: the SPT trains allow you to bring a motorbike or bicycle on board, which is rare in Vietnam. If you are riding the coast and want to skip the congested stretch out of Saigon, this is a practical option.

Seat classes on the SPT trains are straightforward. There is a standard soft seat car with 64 seats and a VIP soft seat car with 48 seats — the latter is a bit more spacious and noticeably colder. Sleeper berths are technically available on some services but make little sense for a 4-hour daytime journey. The standard soft seat is perfectly comfortable for this route.

How to get to and from Phan Thiet Railway Station

The station is not in the center of Phan Thiet, and it is not within walking distance of most hotels — whether you are arriving or departing, you will need transport.

Where is Phan Thiet Railway Station?

The station is located at 1 Le Duan, on the northwestern edge of the city, roughly 3 km from the town center. From the station to Mui Ne is about 24 km, which takes around 25 to 35 minutes by road depending on traffic.

Grab and taxis

Grab works in Phan Thiet and is the most straightforward option. You get a fixed price upfront, no negotiation needed, and the driver is accountable through the app. It is the recommended choice for most travelers, especially if you are arriving alone or unfamiliar with the area.

Metered taxis and xe om drivers also gather outside the station when trains arrive. If you take an unmarked taxi or someone who claims to be a Grab driver but is not using the app, agree on a price before you get in. A reasonable fare to Mui Ne is around 200,000 to 250,000 VND. Booking a Grab from Mui Ne back to the station tends to cost a bit more — around 300,000 VND.

The station does see transport activity even at quieter times of day, but the later the hour, the fewer options you will have. If you are arriving on an unusual schedule, it is worth arranging a pickup in advance through your hotel.

Local bus to Mui Ne

The cheapest way to get from the station to Mui Ne is the red local bus, which departs from just outside the station entrance. It runs approximately every 20 minutes between 05:30 and 20:00 and costs around 20,000 VND per person.

The bus stop is about 50 to 100 meters from the station exit — walk past the crowd of taxi and xe om drivers waiting at the front and you will find it. There is no printed schedule posted at the stop, so factor in a short wait. The bus runs the length of the Mui Ne tourist strip and stops at multiple points along the way, so it will get you close to most hotels.

Facilities at Phan Thiet Railway Station

Phan Thiet Railway Station is small, and its facilities reflect that. There is enough to keep you comfortable during a short wait, but do not arrive expecting a modern transit hub.

Food and drinks

There is a small cafe inside the station selling snacks, packaged food, and drinks. Basic hot food is available — rice dishes have been a reliable option. If you want something more substantial before boarding, it is worth grabbing something here rather than relying entirely on the onboard cafe cart, which is limited.

Toilets

The toilets are basic. Bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer — these are not guaranteed to be available. Running water can also be an issue. The toilets on the train itself are similarly no-frills, so it is worth using the station facilities before boarding regardless.

Onboard the train

Once on the train, there is a cafe cart selling drinks and snacks. All passenger carriages are air-conditioned, though the cooling is uneven — doors between cars are often left open, which lets the cold air escape. If staying comfortable matters to you, try to sit close to the air conditioning unit when selecting your seat.

Luggage

Overhead storage on the SPT trains is on the smaller side. Bags up to around 24 inches fit without much trouble. Anything larger will be difficult to fit in the overhead rack and may cause problems. If you are traveling with a large backpack or suitcase, keep this in mind when packing. Power outlets are available in the carriages, so keeping devices charged on the journey is not an issue.

Shops and souvenirs

There are a few stalls inside the station selling local products and souvenirs. Nothing remarkable, but useful if you want to pick something up before heading back to Saigon.

Buying train tickets for Phan Thiet Railway Station

Tickets for the Phan Thiet to Saigon route are easy to buy, and booking in advance is strongly recommended — especially on weekends, public holidays, and during peak travel periods like Tet and the April 30 holiday. The trains are popular and seats do sell out.

At Phan Thiet Railway Station

There is a ticket office at the station where you can buy in person. This works fine if you are flexible and traveling outside of busy periods, but it is not a reliable strategy if you have a fixed schedule. Counter prices can be marginally higher than online rates. The ticket window also closes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours before departure, so you cannot leave it to the last minute.

Online

Booking online is the better option for most travelers. Two platforms make this straightforward:

  • dsvn.vn — the official Vietnam Railways website, available in English
  • Baolau.com — a reliable third-party platform with English support and a simple booking process
  • 12Go.asia — another solid option, particularly useful for combining train tickets with other transport

All three deliver an e-ticket to your email. A screenshot on your phone is sufficient for boarding — there is no need to print anything. Booking online also lets you choose your seat and compare classes before committing.

Through a travel agent or hotel

Most hotels in Mui Ne and Phan Thiet can arrange train tickets on your behalf, usually for a small fee on top of the ticket price. It is a convenient option if you would rather not deal with the booking process yourself.

If you are traveling with Local Vietnam, train tickets are included as part of your trip — along with transfers to and from the station, so you do not need to organize any of this separately.

Practical tips for Phan Thiet Railway Station

Tips specific to Phan Thiet Railway Station

Your ticket shows your carriage number and seat number. Check both before you board so you know exactly where to go — station staff can help you find the right carriage if needed. This is especially useful when the platform is busy and multiple people are boarding at once.

When you exit the station, you will immediately be approached by taxi and xe om drivers. Walk past them if you are taking the red bus to Mui Ne — the bus stop is further along, about 50 to 100 meters from the exit. If you are taking a taxi, use Grab where possible. If you are negotiating with an unmarked driver, agree on the price before you get in.

The station is small enough that orientation is not a problem, but note that the bus stop is not clearly signposted. First-time arrivals often miss it and end up paying for a taxi when the bus would have done the job for a fraction of the price.

General tips for traveling by train in Vietnam

Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before departure. Use the toilet before boarding — station facilities, basic as they are, tend to be better than what you will find on the train. Bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer regardless of which you use.

Pack snacks and water before you arrive at the station, particularly if you have specific preferences. The onboard cart and station kiosk cover the basics, but selection is limited. For a 4-hour journey this is not a hardship, but it is worth being prepared.

Things to do in Mui Ne

Phan Thiet Railway Station is the starting point for most visitors to Mui Ne, one of the most popular beach destinations in southern Vietnam. The area is best known for its red and white sand dunes, kitesurfing, fresh seafood, and long stretches of beach that have not yet been completely swallowed by resort development.
