Local markets in Phu Quoc (real daily life markets)

These are traditional Vietnamese markets where locals buy their daily food and supplies. You will mostly find fresh seafood, meat, vegetables, and basic household goods rather than souvenirs. They are not designed for tourists, which makes them feel more raw and authentic, but also less comfortable to visit. Most of these markets are best experienced in the early morning when everything is busiest and freshest.

1. Duong Dong Market

Duong Dong Market is the largest and busiest local market on the island. It is a mix of fresh seafood, meat, vegetables, dried goods, and small local products, all packed into a lively and sometimes chaotic space. Its location along the river adds to the atmosphere, with fishing boats unloading and vendors preparing their stalls. It can feel crowded and intense, but that is exactly what makes it one of the most authentic market experiences in Phu Quoc.

The market is located in Duong Dong town, making it very easy to reach from most hotels. It is best to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the activity is at its peak. You can easily combine it with a visit to Dinh Cau Temple or return in the evening to explore the nearby Phu Quoc Night Market. This is not really a place for souvenir shopping, but more for observing daily life and local trade.

2. Ham Ninh Market

Ham Ninh Market is small, simple, and very local. It mainly serves the nearby fishing village, which means the focus is on fresh seafood, basic goods, and everyday items. One of the highlights here is the seafood, especially crabs, which are known to be fresh and often reasonably priced. Compared to markets in Duong Dong, this one feels quieter and more relaxed, with a more village-like atmosphere.

It is located on the east coast of the island and is easy to combine with a visit to Ham Ninh Fishing Village. Many travelers stop here during a drive along the east side of the island. It is a good short stop, but not something you would travel across the island for on its own.

3. Ganh Dau Market

Ganh Dau Market is a small and quiet local market in the north of the island. It mainly sells seafood and basic daily goods, with very few tourists visiting. The market itself is simple, with closely packed stalls and a very local feel. There is not much to see in terms of variety, but it gives a clear picture of everyday life in this less-developed part of Phu Quoc.

It is located far from the main tourist areas, so you will usually only visit if you are already exploring the north. It can be combined with a stop at Ganh Dau Cape or a visit to Bai Dai Beach. On its own, it is not worth the trip, but it works well as a quick local stop along the way.

4. An Thoi Market

An Thoi Market is the largest local market in the south of Phu Quoc and has a strong focus on seafood trading. It feels more authentic than most tourist areas, with busy stalls selling fresh fish, squid, shellfish, and dried products. The overall setup is simple and functional, closer to a traditional Vietnamese market than anything designed for visitors.

The market is located in An Thoi town and is best visited in the morning when the seafood is freshest and the market is most active. It can easily be combined with a ride on the Hon Thom Cable Car or a visit to Sunset Town. Like most local markets, it is more about seeing daily life than shopping for souvenirs.

5. Cau Sau Market

Cau Sau Market is not really a traditional market but more a collection of roadside seafood stalls. The setup is very basic, with fish and seafood displayed directly along the road. It is known for having some of the cheapest seafood on the island, but it lacks the structure and atmosphere of a typical market.

daily products in a traditional wet market setting

It is located near An Thoi and is usually just a quick stop if you pass by. There is no real reason to go out of your way for it, but it can be interesting if you want to see how local seafood is sold in a very simple and direct way.

Night markets in Phu Quoc (tourist-focused markets)

Night markets in Phu Quoc are very different from the local daytime markets. They are mainly focused on street food, souvenirs, and a lively evening atmosphere. Compared to local markets, they are more organized, easier to visit, and clearly set up with tourists in mind.

1. Phu Quoc Night Market

Phu Quoc Night Market

Phu Quoc Night Market is the main night market on the island and one of the busiest places to visit in the evening. It has a lively atmosphere with rows of stalls selling seafood, grilled dishes, snacks, and souvenirs. While it is clearly tourist-focused, it still keeps a bit of a local feel, especially in the food section where you can see seafood being prepared and cooked on the spot.

It is located in Duong Dong town and is easy to combine with dinner or an evening walk. Most visitors come here at least once during their stay. Keep in mind that prices are higher than at local markets, and food quality can vary between stalls, so it is worth taking a short walk around before choosing where to eat.

Note: Older guides may still mention Dinh Cau Night Market and Bach Dang Night Market as separate places, but these were merged years ago into what is now the main Phu Quoc Night Market.

2. Sunset Town Night Market

Sunset Town Night Market, officially known as VUI-Fest Bazaar, is a newer and more developed market in the south of the island. It is clean, organized, and designed to match the surrounding Sunset Town area, which is a purpose-built tourist zone with Mediterranean-style buildings, colorful streets, and a very polished look. Compared to traditional markets, this feels more like an entertainment and dining area than a local market.

It is located inside Sunset Town in southern Phu Quoc and can be combined with a visit to Kiss Bridge or attractions around Sun World Hon Thom. The experience is comfortable and visually attractive, but it has very little connection to local market culture, so it depends on what kind of atmosphere you are looking for.

3. Grand World Night Market

Grand World Night Market is mainly aimed at tourists staying in the north of the island or visiting Grand World Phu Quoc in the evening. It has food stalls, souvenirs, snacks, and entertainment, but the atmosphere feels much more polished and commercial than a traditional Vietnamese night market. Like Sunset Town, it is more of a designed tourist experience than a real local market where residents set up simple stalls each evening.

  • Night markets generally have higher prices than local markets

Hygiene and what to expect

Local wet markets can be messy, especially around seafood and meat sections. You will often see fish being cleaned, strong smells, and floors that are wet or slippery. This is normal in Vietnam and part of the local market experience, but it may not be for everyone.

Night markets are much easier to visit in this sense. They are cleaner, more organized, and better suited for casual browsing and eating.

Best time to visit markets

Local markets are best visited early in the morning when everything is fresh and the activity is at its peak. This is when you will see the most authentic daily life.

Night markets start getting busy after sunset and are best visited in the evening when the atmosphere comes alive. It is best to avoid local markets in the middle of the day due to the heat and reduced activity.

What to buy (and what not)

Good things to buy include dried seafood, local pepper, and fish sauce, which are some of Phu Quoc’s well-known products.

Be more careful when buying pearls, as quality can vary a lot and it is not always easy to tell what you are getting. Souvenirs are widely available, but many are mass-produced and not unique to the island.

Are markets in Phu Quoc worth visiting?

Markets in Phu Quoc are worth visiting if you want to see a bit of local life or enjoy street food in the evening. They offer a different side of the island compared to beaches and resorts.

At the same time, not all markets are must-visits. Many of them are quite simple and can feel similar to each other. It is best to treat them as short stops during your day rather than main attractions on your itinerary.
