Itinerary

Evening: Overnight train to Sapa
Board the Dream Train Express around 10:00 PM from Hanoi for a comfortable overnight journey to Sapa. You’ll sleep in a cozy, air-conditioned 4-berth cabin, styled with local Sapa decor. Bedding is provided, and there’s room to store your luggage under the berth. This night train saves you daylight and lets you wake up in the mountains.

Arrive early at Lao Cai Station (around 6:00 AM), where a minibus will take you up to Sapa. Once there, you can freshen up with a shower, store your luggage, and enjoy breakfast before starting the day.

Breakfast

Hop in your jeep and cruise through Sapa Town and the surrounding mountain roads. After a few kilometers, you’ll turn off onto a peaceful countryside road that winds through green rice terraces. Your destination is the Red Dao village of Ta Phin, set among hills and paddy fields.

Stroll through the village to get a glimpse of daily life in a Red Dao community. Don’t miss the mossy ruins of an old French colonial church — it’s a quiet but atmospheric reminder of the region’s history.

Lunch

After the village visit, drive back the same route to Sapa. The afternoon is yours to spend however you like. You might take the cable car to Fansipan, browse the local market, grab a coffee with mountain views, or just relax around town.

Spend the night at Maison de Sapa (or a similar hotel, depending on availability). This charming boutique hotel offers a cozy and stylish base for your time in the mountains, with warm hospitality and comfortable rooms.

After breakfast, head out for a scenic ride along the road to Lai Chau. Your first stop is the Silver Waterfall — a powerful cascade that’s especially striking during the rainy season. From here, continue to Tram Ton Pass, Vietnam’s highest mountain pass at 2,047 meters. The viewpoint offers sweeping views over the Hoang Lien Son range and the valley below.

Breakfast

Drive further down the scenic pass until you reach Binh Lu village, home to the Black Dao ethnic group. Explore the village, meet some of the locals, and learn a bit about their culture and traditional way of life.

Enjoy lunch in the area before heading back to Sapa. There’s some time to rest and have dinner in town before your transfer to the train station in Lao Cai.

Lunch, Dinner

Take the overnight Dream Train Express back to Hanoi, arriving early the next morning — rested and full of great memories from the mountains.

Tour information

  • This tour runs year-round. However, the best time to visit Sapa is from March to May and September to November, when the weather is pleasant and the rice terraces are especially beautiful.
  • Wear comfortable clothes suitable for walking and sitting in a vehicle. Bring a light jacket, as it can be cool in the mountains, especially in the early morning or at higher altitudes.
  • Most accommodations in Sapa offer free wifi. Mobile signal may be limited in remote areas, so a Vietnamese SIM card is recommended if you want steady coverage throughout the trip.
  • We can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, or other dietary requests — just let us know in advance so we can arrange suitable meals.
  • The tour runs in all seasons. During the rainy season (especially June to August), the Silver Waterfall is more dramatic, but be sure to pack a waterproof jacket just in case.

Trekking in Sapa

We had a wonderful time in Sapa, trekking with the best guide ever. From our ecolodge we walked about 15 km in six hours, with a local lunch, through the bamboo forest, learning about the local tribes, villages and ways of living.

Friendly and well organized!

Very well organized, friendly and super enjoyable. We had a day to spare in Sapa, and within a couple of hours the team arranged a tour through the rice fields for us for the next day. The guides really are local and know what they are talking about.

Unburdened

Our trek in Sapa and the visit to the waterfalls there were amazing. Being one-on-one with a local makes the experience complete, with nice conversations with our English-speaking guide. I booked the hotels myself, and Local Vietnam arranged all our tours, transfers and tickets.

Everything went professionally, a recommendation!

Even in a difficult region like Sapa, with its disastrous over-tourism, the team managed to choose a very quiet and remote hotel for us and a very nice guide. Their skills and local knowledge helped a lot.

Vietnam at its best, worry-free and authentic

Sapa came after Hanoi on our six-day trip, and the silence and beauty of the mountains there touched us. Our homestay was comfortable and really connected to the local Hmong culture. Our hike through bamboo forests and past waterfalls was an absolute highlight.

What security, quality and service!

One of the highlights of our three and a half weeks in Vietnam with our children was trekking through Sapa and staying one night on a real farm with locals. Back to basics, with a huge welcome and a nice look into their way of life.

Enjoyed 3 weeks carefree thanks to Local Vietnam!

The guide who walked with us for three days during our trek in Sapa deserves a special mention: that guide won a special place in our hearts. We traveled as two couples for three weeks from the south to the north of Vietnam, and all our guides were top notch, just what we needed.

Unforgettable experience

Trekking in Sapa with a Hmong guide and sleeping in a real homestay were among the absolute highlights of our trip. We are a middle-aged couple with two teenagers, and it was not easy to plan a trip that suited everyone, but with Local Vietnam's help we managed it.

Fantastic round trip through Vietnam

In Sapa we saw beautiful rice fields and did a beautiful two-day trek. I especially want to say that the woman we stayed with there is a fantastic hostess and guide. We cooked and slept at her home with her family, and she also made us a hot tub with herbs. What hospitality.
