There is no boat direct from Ho Chi Minh City. First you travel to Chau Doc, in the Mekong Delta, around five to six hours by road, then take a speedboat up the river to Phnom Penh, crossing at the Vinh Xuong checkpoint. The boat takes around four to five hours, leaves Chau Doc in the morning, and reaches Phnom Penh in the early afternoon. Fares run from around $20 to $35, with operators like Hang Chau offering the best value. Many travelers do it as part of a two or three-day Mekong Delta trip rather than a straight transfer.
What to know
One important point: the e-Visa is not accepted at the Chau Doc river border, so you must get a visa on arrival here, with $30 in cash and a passport photo ready. It is a rewarding route for anyone with time and an interest in the delta, but slow if you simply want to reach Phnom Penh.
