What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM card embedded in your device, meaning there’s no need to purchase or swap physical SIM cards. You can keep your current SIM card active while adding an eSIM for internet connectivity in Vietnam. Activating an eSIM is simple and done via an app or QR code provided by the eSIM provider.

Benefits compared to traditional SIM cards:

  • No physical SIM card swap needed.
  • Multiple eSIM profiles can be used on one device.
  • Instant activation, even before arriving in Vietnam.

Important things to know before buying an eSIM

Device compatibility

Not all phones support eSIMs, so it’s essential to check if your device is compatible before purchasing one. Most newer phones, such as the iPhone XS and later models, as well as high-end Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S20, support eSIM functionality. Older devices typically do not.

Alternative options

If your phone doesn’t support eSIMs or you prefer a simpler setup, a traditional SIM card is a reliable alternative. Vietnamese SIM cards are widely available and easy to use.

The best network in Vietnam: Viettel

When choosing an eSIM, it’s important to note that eSIM providers don’t operate their own networks. Instead, they rely on partnerships with local mobile networks. This means the quality of your connection depends on the local network the eSIM provider uses.

In Vietnam, the three main networks are Viettel, Vinaphone, and Mobifone, each offering good service in cities. Among them, Viettel is widely regarded as the best, thanks to its strong coverage that extends to rural and remote areas.

If you’re exploring areas beyond urban centers, choosing an eSIM provider that partners with Viettel ensures the most reliable service throughout the country. Always check which network or networks an eSIM uses before purchasing to avoid connectivity issues.

The 4 best eSIM options for Vietnam

There is no single best eSIM for Vietnam. The right option depends on how you travel, how much data you use, and whether you want to arrange everything before you leave.

The four eSIMs below are all solid choices. They work reliably in Vietnam and use the Viettel network, which has by far the best coverage in the country — including outside the major cities. Think of this list not as a ranking from best to worst, but as the best eSIM per type of traveler and use case.

1. Airalo (Best all-round option)

Airalo is the most balanced choice for most travelers. Prices are reasonable, you can arrange everything online before departure, and the eSIM works not just in Vietnam but in many other countries as well. Ideal if Vietnam is part of a longer trip through Asia.

You do not get unlimited data, but for normal use — Google Maps, WhatsApp, email, some browsing — it is more than enough. Streaming or scrolling through social media will drain your bundle faster.

Benefits:

  • Easy to set up online before departure
  • Works across multiple countries in one app
  • Reliable Viettel network

Drawbacks:

  • No unlimited data
  • Less suitable for heavy streaming

Price: from around €10 for 30 days (5 GB)

2. Holafly (Unlimited data)

Holafly is the best option if you use a lot of data and do not want to think about it. You get unlimited internet and the eSIM is activated within minutes via the app.

This is especially useful if you stream a lot on the go — think Netflix during long train rides, bus journeys, or waiting times. Hotels almost always have Wi-Fi, but on the road is exactly where Holafly makes the difference. The price is noticeably higher than other options.

Benefits:

  • Unlimited data
  • Fast and easy activation
  • Works across multiple countries

Drawbacks:

  • More expensive than other eSIMs
  • No local Vietnamese phone number

Price: around €45 for 14 days of unlimited data

3. Viettel eSIM (Cheapest option)

Viettel is Vietnam’s largest telecom provider and offers the best coverage, particularly in remote areas. Prices are extremely low — you can get 1 GB per day for just a few euros per month.

The downside is convenience. You can only get this eSIM once you are in Vietnam, for example at a Viettel store or at the airport (usually slightly more expensive there). You also need to register officially with your passport, which takes time.

Benefits:

  • By far the cheapest option
  • Best network coverage in Vietnam
  • Flexible plans

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot be arranged before departure
  • Activation takes time and requires your passport

Price: from around €3 per month

4. VietnamEsim – Gigago (Viettel arranged in advance)

VietnamEsim by Gigago is essentially a Viettel eSIM that you can buy online before you leave. No store visit required, and you avoid the on-the-spot registration process. That makes it a good middle ground between Viettel and international providers.

You do not get unlimited data and the eSIM only works in Vietnam. It is also a smaller, local provider. That is not necessarily a problem, but there are simply fewer user experiences to draw from compared to Airalo or Holafly.

Benefits:

  • Can be arranged online before departure
  • Good value for money
  • Viettel network without a store visit

Drawbacks:

  • Only valid in Vietnam
  • No unlimited data
  • Less well-known than international providers

Price: 15 days around €13 / 30 days around €18

Using Grab in Vietnam with an eSIM

You can use Grab (ride hailing app) with an eSIM without needing a local Vietnamese number. Here’s how:

  • Keep your primary SIM active: Ensure your primary SIM card remains active to receive the SMS verification code when registering with Grab. You can use international roaming for this purpose.
  • Use eSIM for data: Set your eSIM as the primary data connection while keeping your primary SIM’s roaming turned off. This allows you to save on roaming data costs while staying connected.
  • Zalo for calls: If you’re using Grab and need to communicate with drivers, you can register a free Zalo account with your international number. Many Grab drivers use Zalo for calls, making it a convenient option.
  • No local number required: As long as your phone can receive SMS messages, you can register and use Grab with your international number.

Tips for using an eSIM in Vietnam

1. Activate in advance

Set up your eSIM before arriving in Vietnam to ensure you’re connected as soon as you land. Many eSIM providers offer QR code activation, which can be done from anywhere with an internet connection.

2. Check coverage

Confirm that your eSIM provider uses Viettel or another reliable local network for the best connectivity. Viettel offers superior coverage, especially if you plan to explore rural areas.

3. Monitor data usage

Some eSIM plans come with daily or total data limits. Take advantage of free Wi-Fi in hotels, cafes, and restaurants to save your mobile data for when you’re on the move.

4. Keep your primary SIM active

You can use your regular SIM card for calls and texts while relying on the eSIM for data. This is especially helpful if you need to stay reachable on your regular number.
