About Phu Quoc Airport

Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) is the main airport serving Phu Quoc Island and the only way most travelers arrive here. It is located just south of Duong Dong, the island’s main town, with a driving time of around 10–20 minutes depending on your hotel. The airport handles both domestic and international flights and plays a key role in connecting the island with cities across Vietnam and parts of Asia.

The airport itself is relatively small and straightforward, especially compared to major international airports. Domestic and international passengers use the same terminal building, with separate areas for arrivals, departures, and immigration rather than completely different terminals. This makes it easy to find your way around, but during busy periods the limited space can lead to queues, particularly for international arrivals and check-in.

Direct domestic flights to Phu Quoc Airport

Domestic flights are the easiest and most reliable way to reach Phu Quoc, especially if you are already in Vietnam. Frequencies are generally high on the main routes, but they can change quite a bit depending on season, demand, and airline schedules. During peak travel periods, there are more flights and better timing options, while in low season some routes may have fewer daily connections or even temporary pauses.

Main domestic routes

Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc

  • Flight time: around 1 hour
  • Frequency: approx. 20–25 flights per day
This is by far the busiest and most important route. If you cannot find a direct flight from elsewhere, this is the easiest hub to connect through.

Hanoi to Phu Quoc

  • Flight time: around 2 hours 5 minutes
  • Frequency: approx. 14–17 flights per day
A very popular route, especially for international travelers arriving in northern Vietnam.

Da Nang to Phu Quoc

  • Flight time: around 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Frequency: approx. 4–6 flights per day
A useful connection if you are traveling through central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Da Nang).

Hai Phong to Phu Quoc

  • Flight time: around 2 hours 5 minutes
  • Frequency: approx. 1–2 flights per day
More limited than Hanoi, but still a direct option from the north.

Can Tho to Phu Quoc

  • Flight time: around 1 hour
  • Frequency: approx. 0–1 flights per day
A smaller route with limited frequency. Useful mainly if you are already in the Mekong Delta.

Nha Trang (Cam Ranh) to Phu Quoc

  • Flight time: around 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Frequency: approx. 0–1 flights per day
This route exists but is not always reliable year-round. Always check current schedules.

Direct international flights to Phu Quoc Airport

Phu Quoc has a growing number of direct international connections, mainly from nearby Asian countries. These routes make it possible to skip mainland Vietnam entirely, although availability depends heavily on season and demand.

Main international connections by region

Thailand (Bangkok)

  • Flight time: around 1 hour 20–25 minutes
  • Frequency: approx. 2–3 flights per day (combined airports)
One of the easiest and most consistent international routes.

Singapore

  • Flight time: around 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Frequency: approx. 2–3 flights per day
A very practical hub for international travelers connecting from Europe or other parts of Asia.

Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur)

  • Flight time: around 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Frequency: approx. 2 flights per day
Another reliable Southeast Asia connection with good onward flight options.

Hong Kong

  • Flight time: around 3 hours 10 minutes
  • Frequency: approx. 1–3 flights per day
A growing route with increasing importance for international connections.

Taiwan (Taipei, Taichung)

  • Flight time: around 3.5–4 hours
  • Frequency: approx. 1–2 flights per day (depending on route)
Popular with regional travelers, sometimes seasonal.

South Korea (Seoul, Busan)

  • Flight time: around 5–5.5 hours
  • Frequency: approx. 5–8 flights per day (combined)
One of the busiest international markets for Phu Quoc.

China (various cities like Shanghai, Chengdu, Kunming, Xi’an)

  • Flight time: around 3–4 hours
  • Frequency: varies, often 0–1 flights per day per city
Many routes are seasonal or charter-based.

Central Asia and Russia (e.g. Almaty, Tashkent, Astana, Moscow)

  • Flight time: around 7–9 hours
  • Frequency: limited and mostly seasonal or charter flights
These are not consistent year-round routes.

If there is no direct flight to Phu Quoc

If you cannot find a direct international flight, the easiest solution is to fly via Ho Chi Minh City. This is the main hub for southern Vietnam and has the highest number of daily flights to Phu Quoc, making connections simple and flexible.

Hanoi is another option, especially if you are combining north Vietnam with your trip. From both cities, domestic flights to Phu Quoc are frequent and relatively short, so adding a connection is usually straightforward.

For many travelers, combining an international flight into Vietnam with a short domestic flight to Phu Quoc is still the most reliable and flexible way to plan the trip.

How to get from Phu Quoc Airport to your hotel

Getting from Phu Quoc Airport to your hotel is usually straightforward, but the best option depends a lot on where you are staying. The island is bigger than many people expect, and distances can vary quite a bit.

First thing to know: airport location vs hotel areas

Phu Quoc Airport is located just south of Duong Dong, which makes it very convenient for some areas, but less so for others.

  • Duong Dong (town): around 10–15 minutes. This is the closest and easiest area to reach.
  • Long Beach / Bai Truong: around 10–20 minutes depending on your hotel. Very convenient.
  • Ong Lang: around 25–35 minutes. Still easy, but a bit further north.
  • South Phu Quoc (Sunset Town, An Thoi, Khem Beach): around 25–40 minutes. Roads are good, but distance is longer.
  • North Phu Quoc (Bai Dai, Grand World, Vinpearl area): around 45–60 minutes. This is the longest transfer and something to plan for.

The key takeaway is simple: the airport is well located for central and southern areas, but if you stay in the far north, expect a longer transfer.

Taxi from Phu Quoc Airport

Taxis are the easiest and most common option for most travelers, especially if you have luggage or are traveling as a couple or family.

After exiting the terminal, you will find taxi drivers waiting outside the arrival hall. You can either take a taxi from the queue or walk to the official taxi stand. Reputable companies like Mai Linh and Vinasun are generally the safest choice.

Most taxis use a meter, but for airport trips drivers may also suggest a fixed price. Both are fine, but always confirm the price before you leave. For reference, a ride to Duong Dong or Long Beach is usually in the range of 150,000–250,000 VND, while longer routes to the north or south cost more. There is sometimes a small airport toll added to the fare.

Grab and ride-hailing apps

Grab is available in Phu Quoc and works well in most cases. It’s a good option if you prefer clear pricing upfront and cashless payment.

That said, taxis are often just as easy at the airport because they are already waiting. Grab can be slightly slower to arrange, especially during busy arrival times or late at night. It also depends on whether you already have a working data connection.

If you arrive with a SIM card or eSIM ready, Grab is a smooth option. If not, taking a taxi directly outside is usually quicker.

Hotel shuttle buses and resort transfers

Many mid-range and high-end hotels offer airport transfers, either included or at an extra cost. This is especially common for resorts in the north (Bai Dai, Grand World, Vinpearl area) and some luxury stays in the south.

Resort shuttle van and private cars outside Phu Quoc Airport terminal entrance

This can be one of the easiest options, as the driver will meet you at arrivals and take you directly to your hotel without any hassle. For longer distances on the island, this is often more comfortable than arranging transport on arrival.

If your hotel offers this service, it is usually worth arranging it in advance.

Private car transfer

A private car transfer is similar to a hotel pickup, but booked separately. This is a very good option for families, groups, or anyone arriving late at night.

You get a fixed price, a driver waiting for you, and a direct transfer to your hotel. It’s also useful if you are staying in more remote areas where taxis are less predictable.

For travelers who prefer a smooth start without negotiating or waiting, this is one of the most stress-free options.

Public buses and free resort-area buses

There are public buses and some free bus routes on Phu Quoc, including services that connect the airport with certain resort areas like Grand World.

While these are very cheap or even free, they are not the most practical option for most international travelers, especially if you have luggage or are unfamiliar with the routes. Schedules can also be limited compared to taxis or private transport.

They can work if you are traveling light and know exactly where you are going, but for most visitors, taxis or transfers are much easier.

Motorbike taxi and motorbike rental

Motorbike taxis (xe om) are available outside the airport and are the cheapest option for short distances. They are mainly useful for solo travelers with very little luggage.

Renting a motorbike directly from the airport is also possible, with some rental companies offering delivery to the terminal. This gives you full flexibility to explore the island.

However, after a flight, this is not ideal for most travelers. Roads are generally fine, but traffic and unfamiliar conditions can make it less comfortable, especially if you are just arriving.

Facilities and procedures at Phu Quoc Airport

Terminal layout and what the airport is like

Phu Quoc Airport is small and easy to navigate. Everything is in one main terminal building, and the layout is quite straightforward, so you don’t need to walk far or worry about getting lost.

Arrivals and departures are clearly separated, and signage is generally good. The main thing to understand is that the airport’s size is both a benefit and a limitation. It feels simple and efficient when it’s quiet, but during busy periods it can feel crowded, especially around immigration, check-in, and security.

Arrival procedures for domestic flights

Arriving on a domestic flight is usually quick and easy. After landing, you walk into the terminal, go straight to baggage claim, and then exit the airport.

There is no immigration or complex process, so once you have your luggage, you are outside within minutes. Compared to larger airports in Vietnam, this is one of the easiest arrivals.

Arrival procedures for international flights

International arrivals follow a more standard process, but this is where delays can sometimes happen.

After landing, you first go through immigration. This includes passport control and checking your visa, e-visa, or visa-free eligibility. After that, you collect your luggage, pass through customs, and then enter the arrivals hall.

In many cases, this process is smooth. However, based on traveler experiences, queues at immigration can sometimes be slow, especially during busy periods or when several flights arrive at the same time. At other times, it can be very quick. Expect some variation depending on timing.

Phu Quoc visa-free entry and when you still need a Vietnam visa

Phu Quoc has a special visa policy that allows some travelers to enter the island visa-free for a limited stay, as long as they arrive directly on an international flight and stay only in Phu Quoc.

The important detail is this: if you plan to visit other parts of Vietnam (for example Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, or anywhere else on the mainland), this visa-free option usually does not apply. In that case, you will need a standard Vietnam visa or e-visa.

Because visa rules can change and depend on your nationality and travel plan, it’s important to double-check the current requirements. Here you can read more about how to apply for a Vietnam visa.

Is fast track worth it at Phu Quoc Airport?

Fast track services are sometimes offered at immigration, especially for international arrivals.

For most travelers, it is not necessary. Many arrivals go through immigration without major delays, especially outside peak season. However, during busy periods, queues can become long, and this is where fast track can be useful.

It can make sense if you are traveling with children, elderly passengers, or arriving on a busy international flight and want to avoid waiting. For domestic flights, fast track is not relevant and not needed.

Departure process: check-in, security, and when to arrive

Departing from Phu Quoc Airport is usually smooth, but timing still matters.

Check in counters inside Phu Quoc Airport terminal with passengers waiting for flights

For domestic flights, arriving around 1.5 to 2 hours before departure is generally enough. For international flights, it is safer to arrive around 2.5 to 3 hours in advance.

Even though the airport is small, queues can build up quickly at check-in, immigration, and security, especially during peak travel times. Outside of busy periods, everything can move quite fast, but it’s better not to rely on that.

Wi-Fi, SIM cards, ATMs, and money exchange

Free Wi-Fi is available at the airport, although the connection can sometimes be inconsistent. If you want a more reliable connection, buying a SIM card at arrival is a good option. There are several counters selling SIM cards from local providers.

ATMs are available in the terminal, so you can withdraw Vietnamese Dong after arrival. There are also currency exchange counters, which are convenient, but rates are not always the best. If possible, compare rates or exchange a small amount first.

Restaurants, cafes, shops, and lounges

Phu Quoc Airport has a basic selection of cafes, restaurants, and small shops. You can find coffee, simple meals, snacks, and some souvenirs.

There are usually more options after passing security than before, but overall this is still a small airport, so don’t expect a wide range of choices.

Lounges are available for business class passengers or paid access, offering a quieter space with snacks and seating.

If you arrive late at night or very early, some places may be closed, so it’s not a bad idea to plan ahead.

Seating, water, toilets, and overall comfort

Seating is generally available, especially after security in the departure area, but space can feel limited when the airport is busy. Before check-in, seating can be more limited.

Free drinking water station inside Phu Quoc Airport departure area for travelers

Toilets are usually clean and well maintained. Some areas of the airport have drinking water dispensers, but not everywhere, so many travelers still buy bottled water.

Overall, the airport is comfortable enough for a short stay, but it is not designed for long waits or luxury. It works well for what it is: a small, functional airport handling a growing number of travelers.
